Man pursued by Richmond police had earlier reckless-driving charge  10/08/09 12:01 AM

A man pursued in a high-speed chase by Richmond police Monday had been charged in July with his fifth offense of driving without a license and reckless driving, court records show. Meanwhile, Richmond police spokeswoman Karla E. Peters declined Tuesday to say whether the pursuit in heavy traffic along Nine Mile Road in Henrico County was justified or is under investigation.

A burglary ring that recruited juveniles and preyed on well-to-do, quiet neighborhoods in Hanover and Henrico counties has run its course. A Henrico judge sentenced the leader of the loosely knit operation to two years in prison Tuesday after hearing Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney Nikki Clarke describe how that leader looted and broke into the home of a vacationing school friend.

Two shooting victims pointed out Lawrence Davon Williams in a Henrico County courtroom yesterday as the person who opened fire on them a year ago. The courtroom identifications were enough to bring convictions in a case where little other evidence emerged to explain why Williams, 16 at the time of the shootings, felt compelled to fire at Rashawn Tyler and Kyron Benjamin.

A Richmond woman sentenced to two months in jail and convicted of felony child neglect this month has been released pending an appeal. Sharon Breeden Wood, 37, of the 300 block of Clovelly Road in Windsor Farms, agreed as part of her bail not to drive and to not consume alcohol or take unprescribed medicines, her lawyer said yesterday.

A runaway killer arrested by State Police last year told a Henrico judge this week that he killed his live-in girlfriend in a jealous rage. But the wounds suffered by 22-year-old Melissa Jamerson spoke to more brutal violence. Jamerson’s body was discovered Nov. 2 in an upstairs bedroom of the couple’s apartment at 9001 Patterson Ave. after State Police arrested Justin L. Rice, now 23, near Interstate 64 in Goochland County.

A courtroom full of supporters and her lawyer’s plea that a Richmond woman be punished with community service didn’t sway a Henrico judge yesterday. Sharon B. Wood, 37, of the 300 block of Clovelly Road in Windsor Farms was taken from the courtroom in handcuffs. Wood was found guilty of child neglect and driving under the influence charges in April, following her arrest a year ago at Libbie Place shopping center. Two of her children, 2 and 5, were located in a rear seat. Police said she berated arresting officers.

Geary acknowledged today that he plans to run for commonwealth’s attorney in Henrico, an announcement that comes more than two years before the term expires of longtime incumbent Wade A. Kizer. Both men will be running as Republicans, they said today.

Woman held in son’s death  09/14/09 12:01 AM

A Sudanese woman who immigrated to the United States in 2005 is facing a murder charge in connection with the death of her 5-month-old son. Marlen Ramadan Taboor, 21, was arrested Friday by Henrico County police and was being held last night in the Roanoke City Jail, according to law enforcement spokesmen. Taboor, according to online court records, was charged in Roanoke last Tuesday in the death of her son, Christopher George, last October. It was unclear last night why Taboor was in the Richmond area. She was arrested in the 6300 block of Clover Lane in Henrico, near the intersection of Lakeside Avenue and Hilliard Road.

Henrico police have charged a county man with driving under the influence following a two-car collision that killed one man and sent nine others to area hospitals. The collision Saturday night at 9:40 p.m. occurred after an eastbound Oldsmobile on Williamsburg Road swerved to avoid a motorscooter pulling away from Klockner Drive. The Oldsmobile driven by Jerome J. Lewis, 25, of the 2200 block of Brockway Lane east of Glenwood Golf Club, crossed the center line and collided with an oncoming SUV, authorities said.

Henrico man convicted of voluntary manslaughter  09/11/09 12:01 AM

Domini Damon Thomas admitted firing seven rounds from a 9 mm semiautomatic pistol into James Edward Morris in March. Two more rounds clipped the forehead of Reuben Robinson and shattered his leg. But a Henrico County jury last night didn’t see Morris’ death as a murder, finding Thomas guilty of voluntary manslaughter and not guilty of wounding Robinson, 27.

Budget cuts hit the classroom  09/07/09 12:01 AM

The Richmond school system eliminated half of its funding for field trips. The Hanover County schools cut an elementary school strings program. The Chesterfield County schools laid off many reading teachers and math coaches. With the exception of the Henrico County schools, area school districts are starting this school year with fewer resources, after having to cut millions of dollars to make up budget shortfalls.

Henrico resident arrested for threats, underage solicitation  08/31/09 1:32 PM

Henrico County police have arrested a Henrico man charged in Dinwiddie County with threatening and soliciting sex from a 15-year-old girl. Dinwiddie authorities said today that Chad Newman Shiflett, 31, was indicted by a grand jury there on multiple charges of soliciting a minor and threats. Shiflett was arrested Friday by Henrico police at his home in the 2400 block of Bransford Drive in Henrico.
