Football: Hermitage 27, Mills Godwin 0  10/09/09 11:00 PM

John Stiebel put No. 3 Hermitage on the board early with field goals from 23 and 25 yards, and Brendan Riddick passed for 101 yards on 10 completions as the Panthers blanked the Eagles in a Colonial District matchup. Curtis Grant recorded 12 tackles, and Brandon Rogers added 7 with two interceptions, including one for a 57-yard return for Hermitage (2-0, 4-1).

In Henrico’s first community priorities workshop under first-year Superintendent Patrick Russo, 116 people brought different perspectives to the task of finding common goals during a three-hour session at Hermitage High School.

No. 3 Hermitage repels Deep Run 20-14 in OT  10/03/09 12:01 AM

The playoffs got an early start this year. Very early. Hermitage sneaked by Deep Run 20-14 last night in a wild overtime game filled with passion on both sides, because the players knew what the implications were. “This was definitely big,“ Panthers quarterback Brendan Riddick said. “There were playoffs on the line right there.“

When the football recruiting letters come for Curtis Grant—and they come frequently from all over the country—he reads them and gives them to his mother for inclusion in a scrapbook. She may need several scrapbooks by the time her son is finished at Hermitage High School. The junior has what major colleges covet in a linebacker: size, speed, instincts and an appetite for work.

Kara Kane had two good reasons for the huge smile on her face. No.1, as she posed with her dad, Hermitage football coach Patrick Kane, was for turning 13 years old. She celebrated the arrival of the her teenage years by watching dad’s Panthers, ranked No.8 in The Times-Dispatch Top 10, defeat top-ranked Varina 7-6 last night.
