Football: North Cross 28, Blessed Sacrament 7  09/11/09 11:30 PM

Chris Howard hauled in four receptions for 104 yards and tallied 10 tackles on defense, but Blessed Sacrament Huguenot (1-1) fell to defending champion North Cross (2-1) in a rematch of last season’s VISSA DIII title game. Blessed Sacrament’s defense held North Cross scoreless until late in the third quarter before two quick scores put the Knights behind by 14.

Football: No. 9 Cosby 28, Hopewell 13  09/11/09 11:14 PM

Andre Redd rushed four times for 122 yards and Bryce Dillon caught 28and 27-yard touchdown passes from Fuller Hoepner as the Titans began their season with a victory. Hoepner completed 8 of 16 passes for 116 yards for the winners. Hopewell (0-1) earned its lone offensive score on a 62-yard fourth-period pass from Quantae Gholson to Jules Wise.

Football: Clover Hill 46, Prince George 27  09/11/09 11:12 PM

Joel Caleb rushed for 196 yards and two touchdowns and Connor Donnelly scored on offense and defense to lead the Cavaliers (1-0) to a season-opening win over the Royals (0-1). Caleb had touchdown runs of 11 and 3 yards. Donnelly recovered a fumble in the end zone in the second quarter to give Clover Hill a 20-0 lead. He capped the scoring on a one-yard run. The Cavaliers gained 422 yards on offense.

Football: James River 14, Douglas Freeman 6  09/11/09 11:08 PM

A 10-minute, 21-play drive in the fourth quarter didn’t net James River any points, but it eventually gave the Rapids good field position to score the game-clinching touchdown in a nondistrict game at James River. Kevon White scored for the Rapids inside the one-minute mark. James River took advantage of a bad snap on a punt to score first. Quarterback Josh Wells took it in from three yards out.

Football: Louisa 62, Spotsylvania 15  09/11/09 11:02 PM

For the second time in as many weeks, Louisa’s C.J. Lambert ran back the opening kickoff for a touchdown and the Lions (2-0) won. Rashawn Jackson put points on the board for Louisa by forcing a safety, scooping up a fumble recovery for a TD and blocking a punt which was covered by Brandon Payne in the end zone. Ashton Dixon scored on a 30-yard pass from Elijah Dailed for Spotsylvania (0-2).

Football: No. 5 Thomas Dale 20, No. 8 Manchester 14  09/11/09 10:54 PM

Ben Saunders recovered a fumble in the end zone in the fourth quarter to send the game into overtime, and Thomas Dale rallied past Manchester. Mike Edmunds ran for a 1-yard score in OT, but the Knights’ kick failed. On the 4th and 15, Manchester had a chance to tie and possibly win, but the ball went through the arms of the receiver in the end zone.

Football: Powhatan 30, Midlothian 0  09/11/09 10:48 PM

POWHATAN—Landon Bradley ran for 128 yards and two touchdowns, and the Powhatan defense held visiting Midlothian to 106 yards total offense in an opening night victory. The teams played each other for the first time since 1985. Bradley carried all six times for 66 yards for the Indians’ first TD. Dion Berry contributed 74 yards on eight carries.

Football: No. 4 Hermitage 34, Lee-Davis 12  09/11/09 10:48 PM

Justin Gift returned an interception 88 yards for a touchdown in the second quarter, breaking the game open, sending No. 4 Hermitage to victory. QB Brandan Riddick was 11 for 18 for 196 yards and four TDs and Derek Britt had six catches for 127 yards and three TDs for the Panthers. Nick Yurchak had three catches for 39 yards and caught two 2-point conversions. On the defensive end, Curtis Grant had 13 tackes and Raynard Rebels had nine tackles and a forced fumble.

Football: No. 10 Hanover 34, Patrick Henry 16  09/11/09 10:46 PM

Deane Cheatham ran for two touchdowns and the Hawks defense forced four turnovers in the second half to lead the Hawks past the stubborn Patriots. Behind Jayrin Waller’s 62-yard touchdown pass to Kenny Mock Patrick Henry (0-1) led 10-7 at the half. Cheatham ran for 101 yards on 20 carries and gave Hanover (1-0) the lead for good with a 4-yard touchdown run in the third and added to the lead with a 1-yard plunge in the fourth quarter.

Football: Huguenot 26, Monticello 20  09/11/09 10:34 PM

Keeble Hawthorne intercepted a pass at the 1-yard line with two minutes remaining to help Huguenot rally to past Monticello. Kennard Pryor had 15 carries for 150 yards, and ran for a 2-yard touchdown for the Falcons (1-0). Devon Peoples made six carries for 43 yards, ran for a 12-yard score and a 3-yard extra point. Quinton Watson (23-yard run) and Trevor Williamson (2-yard run) each added a score for Huguenot.

Football: Atlee 27, Deep Run 14  09/11/09 9:58 PM

Trevor Elie ran for two touchdowns and returned a kickoff 88 yards for the go-ahead score to lead Atlee to a nondistrict victory over Deep Run. The Raiders are 2-0 for the first time since 1998. Elie rushed 16 times for 106 yards. He had 122 yards in kickoff returns. Quarterback Dylan Garthright had 67 yards rushing and a TD and 65 yards passing.

Football: West Point 62, North Hampton 6  09/11/09 9:48 PM

West Point ran all over North Hampton on the legs of its running backs. Aaron Roane had 153 yards on six carries and two touchdowns. LaVonte Brown had 114 yards on six carries, rushed for two touchdowns and returned a punt 64 yards for another score. Antonio Roane had 122 yards on four carries and scored three touchdowns. Ike Reid had a 90 yard kickoff return for North Hampton.

Football: Armstrong 31, Thomas Jefferson 25  09/11/09 9:34 PM

Armstrong scored the first 19 points of the game then rallied from a six-point deficit to defeat city rival Thomas Jefferson at Armstrong. Wildcats’ quarterback Xavia Gary threw 80-yard TD passes to Tyee Williams and Dewayne Burnett and rushed for touchdown in the first quarter. TJ’s Marvin Robinson sparked the Vikings to the next 25 points. Robinson ran for two touchdowns and passed to Darius Simpson and Torian Bland for scores.

Football: Collegiate 49, Trinity Episcopal 0  09/11/09 8:52 PM

Trinity Episcopal fielded its first varsity football team five years ago after a 15-year hiatus. Since resuming, the Titans have been gearing up for a return to the Prep League and renewing rivalries with St. Christopher’s and Collegiate. The other local Prep League teams were the first two games on the Titans’ schedule this year. Trinity hadn’t played either in 22 years.
