Goochland posts shutout  11/14/09 12:01 AM

CHARLOTTESVILLE - Goochland High School used a stingy defense and explosive ground game last night to dispatch Millbrook 21-0 in a Group AA, Region II, Division 3 quarterfinal game last night. The contest was played at Monticello High School because of wet field conditions at Goochland. Goochland was able to move the ball effectively on Monticello’s Field Turf and its defense came up with a fourth-quarter goal-line stand that helped preserve the shutout, the team’s second consecutive.

BSH nips North Cross in playoffs  11/14/09 12:01 AM

ROANOKE - John Moore caught a touchdown pass and converted two first downs late in the fourth quarter to help third-seeded Blessed Sacramento Huguenot edge second-seeded North Cross 17-15 in the VIS Division III semifinals last night. Moore finished with 47 yards rushing and led a huge defensive effort for the Knights with 18 tackles. Blessed Sacrament Huguenot (9-2) held North Cross (8-3) to 162 yards and forced five turnovers.

Football: Powhatan 37, Park View 0  11/13/09 10:16 PM

Powhatan secured an undefeated regular season, defeating Park View (4-3 Southside, 6-4). Powhatan (7-0, 10-0) quarterback Shawn Minor was 5 for 7 for 105 yards and two touchdowns. Dustin Kingery had three rushes for 27 yards and two TDs. He had one reception for 52 yards, resulting in a touchdown. The Indian defense held Park View to 59 yards of total offense. Kurt Taylor had two interceptions. Darius Nash had 10.5 tackles. Jay Jackson had 10.

Offseason workouts began in January. Eleven months later, the Highland Springs and Varina football seasons boil down to 48 minutes on a rain-soaked field at Highland Springs. The anticipation has been there all season. So has the pressure. “It’s a rivalry like no other,“ Varina coach Stu Brown said. While other Group AAA regions in the commonwealth begin playoffs this weekend, Varina and Highland Springs are playing for the Capital District title and the huge reward that goes to the winner: a berth in the four-team Central Region Division 6 playoffs.

Football: Collegiate 51, St. Christopher’s 24  11/07/09 7:40 PM

Jake McGee completed 22 of 28 pass attempts for 336 yards and threw for six TDs as Collegiate (3-1 Prep League, 8-1) swamped St. Christopher’s (1-3, 3-7) 51-24. McGee also rushed four times for 37 yards and a touchdown. Russell Harper had six catches for 86 yards and a score. Alex Newsome had seven receptions for 142 yards and two TDs for the Cougars. Trei Kelley had 4 catches for 48 yards and one score.

Poquoson scored 14 points in the second quarter to come away with the win over New Kent. Poquoson was led by Cody Huchison who scored twice and Thomas Garris who accounted for 75 yards on the ground and a touchdown. The Trojans were led by Justin William’s 59 yards on 24 carries and fell to 1-7 in the Bay Rivers and 1-8 overall. Poquoson————————————- 0 14 0 7—21

Football: Hopewell 20, Prince George 17  11/06/09 11:58 PM

Devonte Ennis ran for 67 yards and three scores and the Blue Devils held on to beat the Royals for their first Central District win. Jalen Reeves was 9 for 20 for 145 yards to help lead Hopewell (1-5, 2-7) from a 10-0 deficit. Lawrence Taylor led Prince George (0-6, 1-8) with 121 yards passing, 99 yards rushing and a touchdown. The Royals’ chances for victory were damaged by a bad snap on a field goal attempt late in the contest.

Football: Mills Godwin 24, Deep Run 16  11/06/09 11:20 PM

Jordan Kocen had 11 tackles, a sack and returned an interception for a score as Mills Godwin (3-3, 4-5) defeated Deep Run (4-2, 5-4) in a Colonial District matchup. David Caravati tallied 15 tackles, forced a fumble, recovered a fumble and broke up a pass for the Eagles, and Dane Forlines was 4 of 10 passing for 105 yards. Deep Run’s Kenny Williams was 12 of 25 for 147 yards passing and two TDs, and Holden Bass hauled in seven catches for 96 yards and a score.

Football: No. 5 Highland Springs 21, Atlee 7  11/06/09 11:10 PM

Jaquan Burchette scampered 90 yards for a score on the fourth play of the game and the Springers stayed unbeaten in the Capital District by beating the Raiders. Burchette ran for another touchdown and tossed a scoring pass, finishing with 114 yards rushing and 67 yards passing with four intereceptions. John Saunders led the Springers’ rushing attack with 18 carries for 115 yards. Highland Springs (5-0, 8-1) held Atlee (2-3, 5-4) to 112 yards of offense. Derek Hopkins had two sacks for the Springers.

Football: Louisa 35, Fluvanna 0  11/06/09 11:02 PM

Louisa clinched a playoff birth last night after its victory over Fluvanna. The Lions (5-2 Jefferson District, 7-3) were led by Andrew Mealy who had 11 rushes for 84 yards and two touchdowns and Anthony Hunter (10 carries, 76 yards, 3 TDs). The Flying Flucos got a combined 77 yards on the ground from T.J. Dudley (38 yards) and Ryan Foster (39 yards) as they fell to 2-5 in the district and 3-7 overall.

Football: Petersburg 49, Colonial Heights 0  11/06/09 10:52 PM

Kevin Green finished 10 for 19 for 324 yards and four touchdowns to power the Crimson Wave over the Colonials in a Central District matchup. Keith Johnson totaled 190 yards receiving and four TDs for Petersburg (2-3, 4-4), whose defense held Colonial Heights (1-4, 3-5) to just four first downs enitre game. Anthony Johnson made 11 tackles, Jamal Young had 12 tackles and a sack, Ray Procise added 10 tackles, 1½ sacks and Elton Briggs contributed nine tackles, a sack and a tipped pass for the Wave.

Football: Midlothian 34, George Wythe 8  11/06/09 10:50 PM

Mitchell Perierra had 20 carries for 179 yards and a score as the Trojans defeated George Wythe. Jimmy Whitten added 11 carries for 63 yards on the ground, two touchdowns and also added 54 yards through the air and another score on 4 of 8 passing as the Trojans improved 2-7 overall and 1-6 in the Dominion District. The Trojans were led on defense by Mark Padgett’s two interceptions.

Football: Varina 62, Armstrong 20  11/06/09 10:48 PM

Varina ran away from Armstorng—literally. The Blue Devils amassed 578 yards on the ground in their victory over the Wildcats. Trey Johnson rushed for 266 yards on 11 carries and scored four times as Varina remain undefeated in the Capital District at 5-0. The Blue Devils improved to 8-1 for the season. Breon Jones had six tackles (three for loss) as Varina scored on five of its first seven plays from scrimmage.
