Authorities yesterday announced that they had arrested two Richmond men wanted in separate city homicides. David M. Ellis, 18, of the 3000 block of Garland Avenue, was arrested Monday hours after police found a man dead in a car from a gunshot wound in North Richmond. Police identified the victim yesterday as Kelvin R. Green, 38, of Highland Springs.

The killing of a man in a car near a busy North Richmond intersection yesterday afternoon drew grieving family members and dozens of onlookers. Police were summoned shortly after 3 p.m. after the man was fatally shot in the 3000 block of Third Avenue, just south of East Brookland Park Boulevard in the Highland Park area.

Police have arrested a man wanted in connection with Monday’s fatal stabbing of Troy Kenneth Ferguson in Richmond’s Highland Park area. Officers with the Richmond Redevelopment and Housing Authority’s Public Safety Division arrested Covey Terrell Birchett, 30, at Second and Leigh streets in Jackson Ward, near Gilpin Court, yesterday afternoon. He was charged with conspiracy to commit murder.

A 6-year-old boy is in critical but stable condition after he was hit by a vehicle while running across the street last night in Richmond’s Highland Park, police said. The eastbound vehicle hit the boy in the 700 block of East Gladstone Avenue about 6 p.m., police said. Authorities said the vehicle was moving slowly, but they did not give an exact speed.

Jomon Wilson reacted on instinct. A letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service, Wilson had just started his route today shortly before 10 a.m. in Richmond’s Highland Park neighborhood when he saw smoke coming from the side of a house. Wilson raced up to the one-story bungalow in the 3400 block of First Avenue and began banging on the door.

A house was damaged in a fire this morning in Richmond’s Highland Park neighborhood. No injuries were reported in the fire, which was discovered by a passing mail carrier shortly after 10 a.m. in a one-story bungalow in the 3400 block of First Avenue, near the Milton Street intersection. The fire was quickly brought under control.
