TDIT TOURNAMENT: Will Springers’ road trip lead to the final?

Defending champion and on the road for the first round of The Times-Dispatch Invitational Tournament. Isn’t the Highland Springs boys basketball team supposed to get a home-court perk? “Being young and inexperienced, this gives us a test to be able to travel into someone else’s territory,“ Springers coach George Lancaster said.

Boys: No. 5 Highland Springs 63, Atlee 46  12/16/08 10:46 PM

Natwan Young scored 20 points as well as 12 rebounds, six blocks, four steals and three assists in Highland Springs’ 63-46 victory over Capital District rival Atlee. Aaron Hodnett recorded 18 points, Trey Williams (eight points) had 10 rebounds and two steals, and Xavier Parham (nine points) added 10 assists and four steals for the No. 5 Springers.

Girls: No. 5 Atlee 50, No. 8 Highland Springs 38  12/16/08 9:42 PM

Sydney Henderson scored 23 points and Richelle Price had 13 points to go along with 19 rebounds and two assists as No. 5 Atlee defeated eighth-ranked Highland Springs 50-38. Britt Hill added four steals and five assists for the Raiders. Dashan Ross led the Springers with 17 points while Kyra Coleman contributed 14.  Jones 2, Taylor 0, Jenkins 0, McCullough 0, Hart 2, McCrae 0, Coleman 14, Cannon 3, Ross 17. Totals 17 4-11 38.

Boys: No. 7 Highland Springs 60, Henrico 50  12/12/08 10:12 PM

Xavier Parham connected on 6 of 8 free throws down the stretch to lift the Springers to a 60-50 victory over the Warriors in a Capital District matchup. Parham and Aaron Hodnett each scored 10 points for Highland Springs, ranked No. 7 in the T-D Top Ten Poll. Natwan Young had 13 points, and Trey Williams added 12. Trey Davis paced Henrico with 20 points and 12 rebounds. David Zavelsky contributed 10 points

Mills Godwin: Matt Hatcher (140) looks for a fourth district championship. Matt Brunke (152) is a district champion and regional runner-up. Blake Edwards (160) and Adam Regulinski (171) placed in the district.
  Hermitage: Senior Marty VanPeppen (112) moves up. Regional champ Justin Dennis is at 125. Tom Kizer (Jr. 135) joins brother, John Kizer (Sr., 130). Regional runner-up Marc Heathcock (171) returns, along with Josh El (Sr., 189).

3 from Richmond area complete Army basic training  12/11/08 1:54 PM

Army Pvt. Chidozie J. Anyalewechi, Army Pvt. April Y. Milton and Army Pfc. Keisha E. Smithers have graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C. During nine weeks of training, they studied the Army mission, history, tradition and core values, physical fitness, and received instruction and practice in basic combat skills, military weapons, chemical warfare and bayonet training, drill and ceremony, marching, rifle marksmanship, armed and unarmed combat, map reading, field tactics, military courtesy, military justice system, basic first aid, foot marches, and field training exercises.

The No. 2 ranked Atlee girls basketball team, led by Richelle Price’s 22 points, 10 rebounds and 6 steals, defeated No. 7 Highland Springs in the Midlothian tournament. Brittany Hill added 13 points, and Sydney Henderson had 8 points and 9 assists for the Raiders. Kyra Coleman led the Springers’ effort with 18 points, 11 rebounds and 5 steals. Dashan Ross had 10 rebounds, 3 blocks and 10 points, and Ty Jeffries had 6 points, 8 steals and 7 assists for Highland Spring.

The Douglas Freeman Rebels are a high-expectation team this season. With good reason. Seniors Jake Eastman, Josh Brinkley and Billy Giles bring experience, leadership and skill inside and out. Teammates such as Justin Mann, Phillip Rohrer and Monty Smalley are used to being on the floor a lot of minutes. Some young guys bring youthful energy.

Unless you’re a dyed-in-the-wool member of the Highland Springs basketball family, you are going to need a roster to match names, numbers and faces of the current Springers. For just a little while anyway. The learning curve will be small considering the way Aaron Hodnett, Jeri Mask, Sage Reed and Jarvis Threatt, to name a few, performed last night in an 85-62 victory over L.C. Bird at Mills Godwin in the Rebel Invitational Tournament.
