The Highland Springs defense held Douglas Freeman to minus 63 yards rushing, and the Springers earned their first victory for new coach Loren Johnson.
Football players urge students to tackle reading
Devin McDonald, a third-grader at Fair Oaks Elementary School, knows he wants to be a great football player when he's older. In the meantime, however, he is concentrating on being a great reader. Members of the Highland Springs High School football team, some of his heroes, approve. The Springers took time out yesterday to read some favorite books to students at Fair Oaks and to muster spirit for the school's Accelerated Reader program.

Woodbridge blanks Highland Springs 13-0
De'Antwan Williams scored on runs of 12 and 1 yards to lift Woodbridge to a 13-0 victory over Highland Springs. Williams, who rushed for more than 2,400 yards last season, was held to 82 yards on 31 carries.
