Smoke detector probed in Henrico fire fatal to 3
A family of three—a mother and her two children—who died in an early-morning fire yesterday in Henrico County may have had their escape blocked by heavy smoke and fire. “When our personnel entered the home, they encountered hot, thick, black smoke,“ Henrico Fire Capt. Chris Buehren said yesterday. That condition blocked the only escape route, a hallway, from the home’s three bedrooms.

Meadowbrook holds off Highland Springs
Troy Taylor was emotionally drained. The sweat on his face glistened from the glow of the Friday night lights. He had nothing left to give, but he could hardly conceal his ecstasy. Moments earlier, the final horn had sounded ending the wild and wooly non-district matchup between Meadowbrook and Highland Springs, and his Monarchs had battled their way to a 36-32 victory on the road.

Ex-Tech star Harris likely will start for Eagles
The Philadelphia Eagles are turning to a rookie to replace Brian Dawkins. Victor “Macho” Harris took snaps with the first-team defense yesterday, a strong indication he’s beaten out second-year pro Quintin Demps for the starting spot at free safety. “I had an opportunity and I didn’t capitalize on it,“ Demps said after a closed practice. “That’s competition. That’s what happens.“

JMU eager to see how young players fit in
HARRISONBURG—There’s only one rule when the James Madison offensive line goes for a post-practice treat at Smoothie King—don’t get the small, or else others will laugh at you. The rest is a matter of personal preference. For guard Dorian Brooks, a Highland Springs grad, his personal favorite is “The Hulk,“ a 2,200-calorie ice cream creation. But it’s OK, because the 300-pound senior has to work for it.

Henrico motorcycle shop owner philosophical about zoning mixup
When Ken Germain thought about expanding Ken’s Cycle Center on Nine Mile Road, the logical place to build was an alley used as his driveway. A year and a half later, with the economy collapsed to the point that he doesn’t want to expand right now, he finally has the rezoning approved by the Henrico County Planning Commission. The Board of Supervisors will vote on it in August.
