Football: Hopewell 20, Prince George 17  11/06/09 11:58 PM

Devonte Ennis ran for 67 yards and three scores and the Blue Devils held on to beat the Royals for their first Central District win. Jalen Reeves was 9 for 20 for 145 yards to help lead Hopewell (1-5, 2-7) from a 10-0 deficit. Lawrence Taylor led Prince George (0-6, 1-8) with 121 yards passing, 99 yards rushing and a touchdown. The Royals’ chances for victory were damaged by a bad snap on a field goal attempt late in the contest.

Field hockey: Central District tournament  10/27/09 9:28 PM

PRINCE GEORGE—Regular-season champion Thomas Dale got two goals from Hannah Robbins to defeat fourth-seeded Hopewell 2-0 in the semifinals of the Central District field hockey tournament yesterday. Thomas Dale, the defending district and Central Region champion, will meet third-seeded Matoaca in today’s 4 p.m. final at Prince George. Matoaca advanced with a 2-1 victory over the hosts.

Jermaine Edwards added seven carries for 69 yards and two TDs for Matoaca (4-0 Central, 4-3). Jalen Reeves ran for a 1-yard score to avoid the shutout for Hopewell (0-1, 0-5). Kevin Green accounted for 245 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Crimson Wave to a Central District rout of the Blue Devils. After Ray Prosise blocked a punt out of the end zone to start the scoring for Petersburg (1-2, 3-3), Green (126 rushing, 119 passing) took over with two touchdown passes and a 58-yard touchdown run. Eric McGruger also saw time at quarterback and ran for 132 yards and one touchdown and passed for another touchdown. Petersburg finished with 468 yards of offense,

Demitrius Campbell threw for a 34-yard TD and ran for a 2-yard score as the Knights held off the Blue Devils. Campbell finished 10 for 14 for 150 yards and an interception for Thomas Dale (2-0 Central, 3-2), Mike Edmunds (12 carries, 74 yards) ran for scores of 9 and 2 yards, and Brandon Burton made six catches for 100 yards. Jaylen Reeves put Hopewell (0-2, 1-4) on the board with a 2-yard run in the first quarter, and Quantae Gholson connected with Trashaun Smith on a 7-yard touchdown.

Domico Phillips rushed for 109 yards and three touchdowns and quarterback Andre Coble rushed for two scores and threw for another to lead the top-ranked Monarchs to a Central District win over the Blue Devils. Meadowbrook (1-0 Central District, 4-0) outscored Hopewell 34-0 in the second quarter and led 48-7 at halftime. Ed Rhodes led the Monarchs’ rushing attack with 158 yards and a score on 18 carries. Coble rushed for 104 yards on just eight attempts.

Chase Doval caught a 24-yard touchdowns pass from Jalen Reeves early in the fourth quarter and the Blue Devils defense stood up twice late in the game to give them the win over the Bulldogs. Jalen Reeves (7 for 16, 147 yards, 2 TDs, 1 int.) hit Doval with a 19-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter. The Bulldogs (0-3) responded with a 64-yard touchdown run in the second quarter.

Chance Stone’s second interception came with less than two minutes remaining in an explosive fourth quarter, helping the Confederates seal a victory over the Blue Devils. Emmit Atkins carried 15 times for 178 yards and four TDs for Lee-Davis (1-1). He ran for scores of 13, 64, 4 and 28 yards. Phillip Gardner completed seven passes on 17 attempts for 199 yards and two TDs. He also carried six times for 16 yards, and connected with Justin Becker on an 80-yard touchdown and Brandon Angus for an 8-yard TD.

Andre Redd rushed four times for 122 yards and Bryce Dillon caught 28and 27-yard touchdown passes from Fuller Hoepner as the Titans began their season with a victory. Hoepner completed 8 of 16 passes for 116 yards for the winners. Hopewell (0-1) earned its lone offensive score on a 62-yard fourth-period pass from Quantae Gholson to Jules Wise.
