Hopewell High work delay may be costly
HOPEWELL—Phasing in a $26.6 million renovation project at Hopewell High School could eventually cost the city an extra $9 million, an architect told City Council members last night. Duane M. Harver, with Norfolk-based RRMM Architects, told the council that the city has the option to delay renovations at the school’s gym, auditorium and kitchen and cafeteria to bring the costs of the project to nearly $20 million.

The City Council and the School Board will meet today to discuss the project, which school officials hope will begin this summer and could be completed in about three years. Today’s discussion, however, includes a proposal by city officials to complete the work in phases over as much as five years, to give the city time to come up with the funding.

‘Destiny’ led Pelham to politics
HOPEWELL The young girl enthusiastically approached her outside Hopewell High School’s main office. “I heard you are the mayor,“ the girl told Brenda S. Pelham, hugging her tightly. “I am so proud of you.“ The students are proud of her in their own little way, said Pelham, the school’s attendance officer. “They are making the comments: ‘That’s the mayor,‘“ she said. “I didn’t really realize how big of a deal I guess it is because I am just an ordinary Jane in America.“
