Richmond council, school board push for state funds
Minus Richmond’s current and future mayor, members of the City Council and School Board pressed tonight their priorities for the 2009 General Assembly session. The dinner discussion touched on a range of topics but was dominated by a hope that lawmakers would limit the impact of potentially severe budget cuts on critical services, including education and public safety.

3 Virginians die of car-crash injuries
A Manassas man died of injuries he suffered in a single-car crash in Fairfax County yesterday, Virginia State Police said. Roberto Rivas, 28, was traveling north on Sully Road, south of McLearen Road, at 3:04 a.m. when his vehicle struck a guardrail, ejecting Rivas. He was not wearing a seat belt, police said. Also:

Before Jane Iris Crutchfield died in 2006, the retired Virginia schoolteacher and librarian had quietly decided what to do with the considerable sum she had tucked away throughout her life: She would give it to two universities where she got her education. Crutchfield, or “Miss Iris” as she was known, left more than $2 million to be divided between the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and the University of Virginia.

Daschle to oversee Obama’s health transition team
WASHINGTON (AP)—An official with President-elect Barack Obama’s transition team says former Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle will oversee Obama’s health policy working group. Daschle had been a close adviser to Obama throughout the Illinois senator’s campaign for the White House. Daschle, who represented South Dakota in the Senate, recently wrote a book on his proposals to improve health care and is working with former Senate majority leaders on recommendations to improve the system.
