Benedictine wins 72-56 in Alahambra Catholic Invitational  03/19/10 12:01 AM

CUMBERLAND, Md. - Trey Davis scored 29 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, powering Benedictine past St. Francis Academy 72-56 in the Alahambra Catholic Invitational boys basketball tournament last night. Mike Gbinije added 18 points, seven rebounds and six blocks for the Cadets, who defeated the Baltimore Catholic League champion. Benedictine will play either DeMatha (Hyattsville, Md.) or Catholic High School (Ontario, Canada) today.

VIS boys: Benedictine falters in semifinals  03/05/10 10:30 PM

Bishop O’Connell played its fourth game in four nights, but there were no signs of wear and tear as the Knights, led by Kendall Marshall’s 23 points, handily defeated Benedictine 56-44 in the semifinals of the Virginia Independent Schools boys basketball tournament at Virginia State University last night. The Cadets, seeded No. 1 in the tournament, failed to show much spark until late in the third quarter, while the Knights showed the determination of a team that has faced its share of top-ranked teams this season.

VIS playoffs: Cadets oust Cougars in Division I

Mike Gbinije scored 23 points and grabbed 10 rebounds and Benedictine came away with a 66-45 VIS Division I boys quarterfinal win over Collegiate. The Cadets will face Bishop O’Connell Friday night in the semifinals with the tip scheduled for 7 p.m. The game will be played at Virginia State.

Mike Gbinije scored 23 points and grabbed 10 rebounds and Benedictine came away with the VIS Division I boys quarterfinal win over Collegiate. The Cadets will face Bishop O’Connell Friday night in the semifinals with the tip scheduled for 7 p.m. The game will be played at Virginia State. Trey Davis added nine rebounds and six steals to his 12 points and Mike Thurston chipped in 12 as the Cadets led 35-27 at halftime. They would lead by 19 after three quarters.

Oak Hill Academy defeats Benedictine, 79-65  02/28/10 12:01 AM

When Benedictine last met Oak Hill Academy in December 2007, the Cadets eked out a 73-72 victory. Last night, the outcome was different: Oak Hill justified its national ranking with a 79-65 domination of Benedictine in the Massey Cancer Center Classic at the University of Richmond’s Robins Center. The Warriors ranked 12th in the ESPN/Rise Fab 50 poll were lead by McDonald’s All-American Doron Lamb, who scored 20 points and grabbed six rebounds. Lamb opened the game with nine first quarter points, leading Oak Hill (28-3) to a 19-10 lead.

Benedictine lures top hoops talent  02/27/10 12:01 AM

Oak Hill Academy, a basketball powerhouse that produced NBA stars Carmelo Anthony and Jerry Stackhouse, must see a little of itself in Benedictine. What Oak Hill has been able to accomplish on a national level—attract top talent and produce one of the country’s best teams—Benedictine has done in the Metro area. The two meet today at the Robins Center at 6 p.m. in the Massey Cancer Center Classic.

R.J. Price scored 15 points, Matt Gbinije had 14, but Benedictine fell to Blue Ridge. Kevin Gill added 11 points for the Cadets, and he and Price combine for six of the team’s eight 3-pointers. BENEDICTINE (22-5) Moody 9, Davis 7, K. Gill 11, George 0, Price 15, Thurston 5, Gbinije 14, Tiller 2, Pilot 0. Totals 19 17-24 63.
