State Police: Motorcyclist killed in pursuit was one of 3 traveling 100 mph on I-95
A Henrico County man who died after crashing into a guardrail Saturday was one of three motorcyclists who eluded police on Interstate 95 while racing in and out of traffic at more than 100 mph, authorities disclosed today. Erwin Brower, 27, of the 4400 block of Foxtail Lane died at the scene after crashing his Suzuki GSX-R600 racing bike on the ramp leading from southbound Chippenham Parkway to northbound I-95, said state police Sgt. Thomas Molnar.

TRAFFIC ALERT: Wreck blocks I-95 ramp in Petersburg
A wreck is blocking the exit ramp from southbound Interstate 95 to Wagner Road in Petersburg. Virginia State Police said the wreck occurred about 5:30 a.m. They report no injuries. Further details were not immediately available.

Crews dig deep to build bridge in N.Va.
The Purple Heart Bridge over the Occoquan River is being widened to catch up with years of traffic growth in Northern Virginia. The bridge, built in the early 1990s, links Prince William and Fairfax counties and has long been known as a major bottleneck along Interstate 95. The $123 million widening project will add a fourth lane to I-95 between Occoquan and Springfield, on both sides of the highway.

TRAFFIC ALERT: I-95 north ramp to Route 288 at Exit 62 closed
The Virginia Department of Transportation says today the ramp from Interstate 95 north to Route 288 (Exit 62) in Chesterfield County remains closed because of an overturned tractor trailer. Crews are in removing the trailer from the ramp, which is expcted to reopen about 1 p.m.

A woman suffered fatal injuries and seven other people were sent to hospitals yesterday after a van headed to a family reunion collided with a sport utility vehicle on Interstate 95 in Chesterfield County. Henrico stretch of I-64 will be repaved next year
The recession-delayed repaving of a stretch of Interstate 64 in Henrico County and the rehabilitation of Interstate 95 bridges in Richmond will go forward next year at a total cost of $163.3 million, state transportation officials said yesterday. The $43.3 million I-64 project will repair and resurface 5.6 miles of much-patched pavement on both sides of the sixand eight-lane highway between Parham Road and the Bryan Park interchange with I-95.

Appeals court orders Va. to file revised brief in Beltway sniper’s appeal
A federal appeals court has ordered the Virginia attorney general’s office to file a replacement brief, with “proper citations,“ defending the death sentence of John Allen Muhammad, one of the Beltway snipers. Muhammad was sentenced to death in 2004 for the Oct. 9, 2002, capital murder of Dean Meyers in Prince William County, part of a rampage he masterminded that left 10 dead and a half-dozen wounded in four states and the District of Columbia.

Loose tire causes truck to overturn on I-95, spilling fuel
A wayward tire from a tractor-trailer caused a fuel-tanker to overturn and spill thousands of gallons of diesel fuel on northbound Interstate 95 in Richmond yesterday, police said. The wreck occurred just before 1 p.m. near the Hermitage Road interchange, closing two northbound lanes for hours, said Virginia State Police Sgt. Tom Cunningham.

Richmond woman killed in wreck on Interstate 95
A Richmond woman was killed yesterday in a two-vehicle wreck on Interstate 95 in Richmond. Barbara Jean Simmons, 67, died at the scene of the crash that occurred shortly after 7 a.m. in the southbound lanes of the interstate near mile marker 69 and the Chesterfield County line, authorities said. Police said she was not wearing a seat belt.
