High school football player of the week
(Note: The twins were interviewed separately.)
What Jered did: The 5-11, 170-pound senior quarterback combined with his fraternal twin to produce five touchdowns as the Tigers knocked off then-ninth-ranked Hanover 34-24. Jered was 7 of 14 passing for 96 yards and two touchdowns, and had six carries for 84 yards and one TD. Also had four tackles and two pass breakups from his safety spot. What Jacob did: The 5-10, 195-pound running back had 62 yards on 14 carries and two TDs. He caught three passes for 25 yards and two TDs. He also had one tackle on defense. Age: 17 (both, obviously) Describe your brother: Jered—“He’s hardworking, smart and very dedicated.“ Jacob—“He’s a great athlete and he works hard. He makes the right decisions. He’s a big-time leader, too.“ Describe the similarities: Jered—“We think the same. We have the same mindset on the field and off the field. We just want to win, no matter what it takes.“ Jacob—“We both have the same smarts about football. We’re both leaders.“ Describe the differences: Jered—“I’m a bit more playful. He takes things a little more serious. He works, not harder, but he’s just in the gym more.“ Jacob—“Our work ethic.“ What do you like about being a twin? Jered—“I’m never bored. I’m never lonely.“ Jacob—“I always have somebody to hang out with. I’m never bored.“ Biggest challenge: Jered—“Probably algebra and trigonometry.“ Jacob—“Paying attention to details sometimes.“ Toughest opponent: Jered—“I’d have to say my brother.“ Jacob—“I’d have to say math class—trigonometry.“ Favorite food: Jered—“Japanese.“ Jacob—“Chicken.“ Favorite subject: Jered—“Physics.“ Jacob—“History.“ Favorite athlete: Jered—“Pat White.“ Jacob—“Adrian Peterson.“ Future plans: Jered—“Get a scholarship to college and play football. I’d probably like to be a physical therapist. . . . I’d like to learn to help people recover. I’ve been in there a lot.“ Jacob—“I want to go to college and get a scholarship to play football. I want to have a successful job. I don’t know what that is yet.“ If you had one wish: Jered—“Go to the playoffs.“ Jacob—“For us to win the state. If you’re going to wish, you might as well wish big.“—Tim Pearrell

High school notes
While the rest of the Central Region may have raised its collective eyebrows over J.R. Tucker’s 34-24 comeback victory over then-ninth-ranked Hanover last week, Tigers football coach Matt Crenshaw did not. “It wasn’t a big shock,“ said Crenshaw, whose team stormed back from a 24-9 deficit in the third quarter. The Tigers, despite the turmoil caused after former head football coach Mac Leighton was accused in May of sexual involvement with two students, have been coming on since last season.
