Boys cross country: Richardson outlasts Pollock

He blew through the finish line at Pole Green Park late yesterday afternoon, then decelerated, then slowed to a walk as a meet official recorded his race number. Once he reached the end of the chute, Ted Richardson of James River, the newly minted Central Region cross country champion, turned and paused for a moment as runner-up Grant Pollock of Mills Godwin approached.

Maddie New made 31 assists to help third-seeded James River defeat No. 6 L.C. Bird 3-0 in the quarterfinals. Drew McLean added eight kills, three digs, a block and an assist for the Rapids. Knights-Rapids field hockey showdown comes early this year  11/02/09 12:01 AM

The Thomas Dale field hockey team’s path to three consecutive Central Region championships has gone through James River each season. The Knights defeated the Rapids in the 2006 and 2007 title games and in last year’s semifinals. Because of pre-determined pairings, Thomas Dale and James River play again this year. It just happens to be in today’s quarterfinals.

Football: James River 48, Huguenot 24  10/30/09 8:38 PM

Calvin Jefferson rushed for three touchdowns, including a 90-yard kickoff return, and the Rapids defeated the Falcons in a Dominion District matchup. Kevon White (14 carries, 67 yards) ran for two TDs, and QB Josh Wells (4 for 6, 91 yards) threw for two scores for James River (4-3, 5-3), including a 62-yard TD pass to Nelson Harris. Mario Williams paced Huguenot (2-4, 3-5) with three returns for 162 yards, including an 88-yard kickoff return for a TD, and two receptions for 56 yards. Donald Hill led the defense with a total of 14 tackles, nine solo and five assisted.

Field Hockey: Cosby 5, James River 1  10/30/09 8:24 PM

Taylor Johnson scored three goals and Lee McKenna and Catherine Rogerson each added one as Cosby claimed the Dominion district championship with a win over James River. Cosby will play Matoaca at 6 p.m. Monday in the Central Region playoffs. James River travels to Thomas Dale for a 4:00 matchup. James River————————————- 0 1—1

Football: James River 42, George Wythe 7  10/23/09 9:30 PM

Kevon White rushed 12 times for 160 yards and three TDs as James River (3-3 Dominon, 4-3) defeated George Wythe (0-5, 0-6). Calvin Jefferson had one reception for 41 yards for a touchdown and a 95-yard kick off return to open the second half. James River’s defense held George Wythe to 103 yards of total offense. Zack Duell had an interception, two pass break ups and six tackles.

PREP NOTES: Deep Run girls get best of volleyball rival Godwin  10/21/09 12:01 AM

Even though the Deep Run girls volleyball team won the first two games against Mills Godwin last week, no one was surprised the match wound up going five games. Deep Run won 16-14 in the fifth. The Colonial District rivals went five in last year’s district tournament final that Godwin won (17-15). They went five twice in tournament play in 2007. The Eagles won the district final; the Wildcats won the region title and went on to win a second straight state Group AAA crown.

Westfield win golf title  10/21/09 12:01 AM

MONETA - The weather may have been perfect for golf, but Waterfront Country Club continued to beat up the participants in the Virginia High School League Group AAA tournament. The survivors in yesterday’s final round were first-round leader Westfield and Battlefield’s Andrew Lister. Westfield, paced by Wesley Liu’s 72, shot 305-617, 11 strokes better than runner-up James Madison. Liu shared low score honors for the day with James Madison’s Chris Wendell.
