James River 20, Monacan 7
Monacan’s two-way player Logan Staib threw for a touchdown and got eight tackles in the Chiefs lost to James River. James River (5-3 Dominion, 6-4) was led by Josh Wells, who combined 116 total yards of offense and a touchdown. Kevon White added 106 yards on 22 rushes and a score while Jesse Wells had an offense and defensive score. Staib went 16-for-34 for 210 yards, a TD but he also threw three interceptions as Monacan fell to 3-5, 3-7 overall.

Cross Country: James River’s Richardson claims state title
James River senior Ted Richardson finished yesterday’s Virginia High School League Group AAA boys’ championship cross country meet with a huge grin on his face. It didn’t leave as he sat on the benches after the finish, and it certainly didn’t leave as he walked up the chute to be greeted by family, teammates and supporters. The senior from James River High School completed his first running season back from a stress fracture with an individual state title.

Mills Godwin, Deep Run meet for Central Region girls volleyball title
James River’s season-long goal to reach the Central Region girls volleyball tournament final and gain a berth in the state tournament will go unfulfilled. Mills Godwin got in the way again. The Eagles (19-5) eliminated the Rapids (20-4) for the third year in a row last night at Cosby. Mills Godwin won in five games: 24-26, 25-15, 25-18, 23-25, 15-13. The Eagles, the defending region champions, are back in tomorrow night’s 7:30 title game. They play Colonial District rival Deep Run, which halted a hot Cosby team 25-21, 25-20, 25-17.

Julia Cushman had 30 assists and five aces to lead James River to a sweep of Prince George in the Central Region quarterfinals. Donna Young had four blocks and four kills to lead the Royals. Taralyn Barnett paced the Rapids with 10 kills. Boys cross country: Richardson outlasts Pollock
He blew through the finish line at Pole Green Park late yesterday afternoon, then decelerated, then slowed to a walk as a meet official recorded his race number. Once he reached the end of the chute, Ted Richardson of James River, the newly minted Central Region cross country champion, turned and paused for a moment as runner-up Grant Pollock of Mills Godwin approached.

Maddie New made 31 assists to help third-seeded James River defeat No. 6 L.C. Bird 3-0 in the quarterfinals. Drew McLean added eight kills, three digs, a block and an assist for the Rapids. Hannah Robbins scored twice in the first half and Kim Church tallied in the second half to give the Knights the win over the Rapids in the Central Region quarterfinals. Knights-Rapids field hockey showdown comes early this year
The Thomas Dale field hockey team’s path to three consecutive Central Region championships has gone through James River each season. The Knights defeated the Rapids in the 2006 and 2007 title games and in last year’s semifinals. Because of pre-determined pairings, Thomas Dale and James River play again this year. It just happens to be in today’s quarterfinals.

Football: James River 48, Huguenot 24
Calvin Jefferson rushed for three touchdowns, including a 90-yard kickoff return, and the Rapids defeated the Falcons in a Dominion District matchup. Kevon White (14 carries, 67 yards) ran for two TDs, and QB Josh Wells (4 for 6, 91 yards) threw for two scores for James River (4-3, 5-3), including a 62-yard TD pass to Nelson Harris. Mario Williams paced Huguenot (2-4, 3-5) with three returns for 162 yards, including an 88-yard kickoff return for a TD, and two receptions for 56 yards. Donald Hill led the defense with a total of 14 tackles, nine solo and five assisted.
Field Hockey: Cosby 5, James River 1
Taylor Johnson scored three goals and Lee McKenna and Catherine Rogerson each added one as Cosby claimed the Dominion district championship with a win over James River. Football: James River 42, George Wythe 7
Kevon White rushed 12 times for 160 yards and three TDs as James River (3-3 Dominon, 4-3) defeated George Wythe (0-5, 0-6). Calvin Jefferson had one reception for 41 yards for a touchdown and a 95-yard kick off return to open the second half. James River’s defense held George Wythe to 103 yards of total offense. Zack Duell had an interception, two pass break ups and six tackles.
