Football: Clover Hill 23, James River 20
Joel Caleb scored on defense and offense in the fourth quarter to lead the Cavaliers to a comeback win over the Rapids in a Dominion District clash. Caleb had a had in all but one point for Clover Hill (2-1, 3-1), totaling 215 all purpose yards (109 rushing, 106 passing). His performance overshadowed a 3-touchdown night for Matt Brooks that propelled James River (1-2, 2-2) to a 20-8 lead entering the last quarter.

Prep runners flock to two invitationals
Even though it drew nearly 2,300 participants from 12 states and the District of Columbia, the U.S. Army X-Country Festival at Maymont Park was only the second largest high school cross country event going on in Virginia this past weekend. The Oatlands Invitational at Oatlands Plantation in Leesburg had more than 3,000 finishers. Megan Moye of Cosby ran an 18:54 and finished seventh in the “A” race at Oatlands. The Titans girls were seventh among the teams. Cosby’s Evan Niciphor was 13th in the boys “A” run with a time of 16:32. The Titans were 28th.

Quarterback Fuller Hoepner scored his second touchdown of the evening on a 7-yard scamper with 32.5 seconds remaining to lift the seventh-ranked Titans past the Rapids. Hoepner carried 17 times for 112 yards and two touchdowns for the winners (2-0 Dominion District, 3-0). He completed 14 of 17 passes for 99 yards. His passing performance included a pair of interceptions.

Football: James River 21, Midlothian 6
Josh Wells was 7 of 10 passing for 119 yards and a TD, and he tallied 62 yards on nine carries to lead the Rapids over the Trojans in a Dominion District showdown. Wells’ twin brother Jesse led the James River offense with nine tackles and a blocked extra point attempt. Midlothian (0-1, 0-2) got off to a good start with Charles Poindexter’s 6-yard TD run in the first quarter, but James River’s Matt Brooks (3 carries, 73 yards and a TD) twice picked off Jimmy Whitten (15 of 30 for 148 yards) to slow the pace.
