State GOP has new candidate for chairman
Bill Stanley, a Franklin County lawyer and county Republican chairman, announced his candidacy yesterday for chairman of the Republican Party of Virginia. He will oppose Pat Mullins, the Louisa County chairman who is a former chairman of the Fairfax County committee, at the state GOP convention May 29-30 in Richmond. On Saturday, Mullins was elected chairman by the party’s ruling body, the state central committee. He replaced Del. Jeffrey M. Frederick of Prince William, who was ousted by the committee last month because of fundraising and election woes that have befallen the Republican Party since Frederick became chairman.

So far, no one has stepped forward to run against him.

Wow
While seeking the chairmanship of the Republican Party of Virginia, Jeff Frederick said he would not run for re-election as a delegate from a district in Northern Virginia. He became chairman, announced he would not run in Prince William this year, and subsequently was ousted by the party’s central committee. Many anticipated that Frederick’s wife, Amy, would seek the delegate seat; she apparently explored a bid. Capitol Square types regard her highly. Although she would have rated a capable contender, the other day she decided against running. Her statement said a lot.

Grassroots
Last weekend the central committee of the Republican Party of Virginia ousted Jeff Frederick as party chairman. Although openly elected at last year’s state convention, Frederick was not the right person for the job. He was disqualified by temperament and other factors. The committee did not take this decision lightly. It made the right call.

McDonnell calls for unity after leading ouster of party chairman
It’s not easy running for governor when you have to run off the head of your party. Consider Republican gubernatorial candidate Bob McDonnell—who endorsed the ouster of GOP Chairman Jeffrey M. Frederick—and now is making a plea for party unity. “We must turn our attention to the November elections and work together to advance our positive, common-sense vision for bringing jobs and opportunity to every region of Virginia,“ McDonnell said in a statement. “I look forward to leading the effort to unify our party after this vote.“

Frederick revises House campaign finance report
Del. Jeffrey M. Frederick, the embattled chairman of Virginia’s Republican Party, has filed unusually extensive revisions to his latest House campaign finance report. The amended filing Frederick submitted to the State Board of Elections a week ago adds 138 contributions worth nearly $32,000 that did not appear in his Jan. 15 report. The revised report is unrelated to his rocky 10-month tenure as head of the state GOP and Saturday’s scheduled vote by the party’s central committee on his possible ouster.

Bill Stanley, chairman of the Franklin County Republican Committee, who once represented Paula Jones in a sexual-harassment case against then-Gov. Bill Clinton of Arkansas, and A.J. Dudley, also a Franklin County lawyer, will represent Frederick. Dudley is the son of former Del. Allen W. Dudley of Franklin County.
