Search for Henrico couple planned in South Richmond  01/12/10 12:01 AM

Alicia Rasin, founder of Citizens Against Crime, is organizing a search on Saturday for a missing Henrico County woman and her boyfriend. Angela Laverne Moore and her boyfriend, Tracy Oneal Scott, both 41, were last seen Dec. 28 about 4 a.m. at Club Illuzion at 1734 Broad Rock Blvd. in South Richmond, said Henrico police Lt. Eric Owens.

Man guilty in fatal beating and second attack  08/20/09 12:01 AM

A second Richmond man was convicted yesterday for his role in the fatal beating of one man and for beating another man nearly to death the same day. Jose C. Bello-Garcia, 25, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in the March 29 death of Baudilio Lopez-Andres, 52, in an abandoned house along Jefferson Davis Highway, and to malicious wounding for the beating of another man behind the nearby Golden Food Market.

Man convicted in fatal beating and second attack  08/19/09 12:01 AM

A Richmond man was convicted yesterday for fatally beating one man in an abandoned house and for beating another man nearly to death behind the Golden Food Market the same day. Jose Raul Gaitan, 27, entered an Alford plea to a charge of second-degree murder, meaning he does not admit guilt but acknowledges there is enough evidence to convict him. He also pleaded guilty to malicious wounding.

Police, proprietors discuss crime in South Richmond  07/16/09 12:01 AM

Hours after a robbery suspect died of wounds from a weekend shooting in a South Richmond store, police officials met last night with area business owners to discuss efforts to curb crime. James Grooms III, 30, died about 11:20 a.m. yesterday at VCU Medical Center of injuries sustained Saturday during the attempted robbery at the Golden Food Market in the 2700 block of Jefferson Davis Highway.

Richmond Store owner grateful for man who shot robber  07/15/09 12:01 AM

Three days after Mustapha Kassou was shot in an attempted robbery in his store in South Richmond, he said that he owed his life to the man who ended the ordeal by shooting the robber. Yesterday, Kassou returned to Golden Food Market on Jefferson Davis Highway for the first time since he was shot there Saturday afternoon. Kassou said the masked robber walked into the store shortly after 1 p.m. and seemed startled to see about eight people inside. The robber told everyone to get on the floor, and then he fired at Kassou and hit him twice, he said.

A couple of blocks north on Jefferson Davis Highway, a wood-framed photo of slain co-owner Ashraf “Alex” Alatiyat greeted the few customers who trickled in to Come and Go Food Market.

Richmond police have charged a 30-year-old South Richmond man in the aborted robbery of a convenience store that left him and the store owner wounded. James Grooms of the 2200 block of Chalfont Drive remains hospitalized after being shot by a friend of the owner of Golden Food Market at 2701 Jefferson Davis Highway in South Richmond, police said.

Police cite efforts in Jefferson Davis area  06/26/09 12:01 AM

Two Richmond police officers were patrolling Jefferson Davis Highway on foot late Wednesday night when a resident alerted them to a suspicious car in the area of Yorktown Avenue. Acting on the tip, officers stopped the car, seized drugs and guns and arrested four people, police Cmdr. Steve Drew told nearly 100 people at a community forum last night at the Satellite Restaurant on Jefferson Davis in South Richmond.

Richmond store clerk hurt in Jefferson Davis shooting  06/13/09 12:01 AM

Richmond police are investigating the shooting of a convenience store clerk last night on Jefferson Davis highway only about three blocks from where a shopkeeper was killed this week. Two gun-wielding males wearing all black entered the Golden Food Market in the 2700 block of Jefferson Davis shortly before 10 p.m., said Richmond police Capt. Scott Booth.

Sure, you can get your kicks on Route 66, but why bother when Route 1 is in your backyard? That’s a question that occurred recently to Scott Rogers. Rogers has a passion for Jefferson Davis Highway. A Chesterfield County native and president of the Jefferson Davis Association, he runs a restaurant on U.S. 1 in Chester. Rogers’ parents and friends passed on memories of Jeff Davis in its heyday—the 1920s through’60s—when Chester was a summer destination with cabins on a lake, a vibrant, thriving strip of motels, diners and neon lights.

Pedestrian victim from Petersburg  02/01/09 12:01 AM

Chesterfield County police have identified the pedestrian killed Friday on U.S. 1 as Frank Tinsley White Jr., 43, of Petersburg. White died at the scene after being struck by a car about 7:45 p.m. in the 16400 block of Jefferson Davis Highway, police said. A sedan was northbound on Jefferson Davis when it struck White while he was walking in the road, police said. The driver suffered minor injuries. An investigation is continuing.
