Red Door Gallery to open its group exhibition  07/16/09 12:01 AM

Red Door Gallery’s “2009 Group Exhibition,“ featuring works by 11 Richmond artists, opens tomorrow with a reception from 6 to 9 p.m.  “It’s a smorgasbord of art,“ said gallery manager Meredith Timberlake. “There are all kinds of media, all very affordable.“

Main Art Gallery opens printmaking show  07/09/09 12:01 AM

Main Art Gallery in the Fan District recently opened “Limited Edition: Exploring Printmaking at the University of Mary Washington.“  The exhibition features art by Jesse Kopp, Andrew Sniffin, Molly Mathusa, Justin Owens and Molly Cambell. The works were created during two semesters of courses taught by Rosemary Jesionowski. The students explored printmaking and its various techniques, from monotypes to intaglio as well as traditional processes and modern, digital processes.

Gallery 5800 is celebrating the summer season with “Summer Magic,“ a one-woman show by Chesapeake-area artist Suzanne Morris.  The show consists of 40 framed original oil paintings that depict the sights of summer, including sailboats, beaches and small harbors.

Henrico students’ art on display at Lewis Ginter  06/18/09 12:01 AM

Botanical-themed works by Henrico County middle-schoolers are on display in the Robins Visitors Center at Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden in Lakeside.  For seven years, Lewis Ginter has partnered with the Henrico County school system to offer rotating student art exhibitions, said children’s education coordinator Kelly Riley.

Interior design senior thesis show opens  06/11/09 12:01 AM

Crossroads Art Gallery recently opened an exhibition featuring thesis work by Virginia Commonwealth University interior design seniors.  Their charge: to take Richmond-area buildings and use them for programs with a strong social aspect. The initiatives they developed include a library for the arts in the Sauer’s factory building, an organic vegan bakery in Carytown and a boat-building academy on the James River.

Ghosprint Gallery opens illustration show  06/04/09 12:01 AM

In conjunction with June’s First Fridays Artwalk, Ghosprint Gallery will open the Richmond Illustrators Club’s third annual juried show tomorrow from 7 to 10 p.m.  The gallery received about 150 submissions from illustrators from across the country as well as the United Kingdom, said gallery owner Geraldine Duskin.

Oregon Hill focus of Richmond History Center exhibit  05/28/09 12:01 AM

The Valentine Richmond History Center recently opened “Disciples of Vulcan: Examining the Resilient Oregon Hill Community.“  The exhibition uses photographs, maps and more to tell the story of the community, from its establishment in the 1840s as a tightly knit working-class neighborhood for immigrant employees of Tredegar Iron Works to modern-day preservation efforts.

Multimedia group exhibition opens at Artisan Alley  05/07/09 12:01 AM

Artisan Alley, at 323 E. Broad St. in downtown Richmond, recently opened a multimedia group exhibition.  The show includes oil, pastel and watercolor paintings as well as blown-glass works, furniture, and metal and wall sculpture. Artists include Jim Lengyel, Bart Levy, Dick Levy, Maggie Willsey, Karen Ward Thompson, Kyle Lucia, Vanessa Sermández and Kristi Totoritis.

Matt Lively paintings on exhibit at Red Door Gallery  04/23/09 12:01 AM

Paintings by Richmond artist Matt Lively make up “Home,“ an exhibition recently mounted at the Red Door Gallery.  Lively created most of the works in connection with “The Wind Chill Factory” film project. He created the concept for the movie, which is being filmed in Richmond and will premiere in November in Raleigh, N.C.

Gallery5 in Jackson Ward explores the world of printmaking in “Due Process,“ a Kevin Orlosky-curated show featuring the work of artists from across the country.  With “Due Process,“ the gallery hopes to educate viewers about the processes involved in printmaking, an ancient and versatile medium for creating art, said Gallery5’s executive director, Amanda Robinson. Another goal is to combat the stigma attached to the medium as a result of “editioning,“ or mass-producing, an image.

Crittenden Studio now showing ‘Off the Clock,‘ a juried exhibition of the American Society of Media   04/02/09 12:01 AM

Crittenden Studio in Richmond’s Old Manchester District recently mounted “Off the Clock,“ a juried exhibition of the American Society of Media Photographers’ Central Virginia Chapter. Thirty-six members submitted 152 entries from their personal portfolios, 22 of which were selected.  National Geographic photographer David Alan Harvey; Jeffrey Allison of the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts; and Keith Ireland, creative director for BCF Advertising, judged the works. They praised the photographs for their storytelling and strong cultural content. They also appreciated the unexpected moments the photographers captured in their images.  The exhibit runs through May 13 at 201 W. Seventh St. in the Corrugated Box Building. The gallery will be open tomorrow from 7 to 10 p.m. for First Fridays Art Walk. Regular business hours are from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. Gallery 5 presents “The Art of Surviving”  03/12/09 12:01 AM

‘The Art of Surviving’ at Gallery 5       “The Art of Surviving,“ which portrays victimization and celebrates healing through the art and poetry of sexual violence survivors, is on display at Gallery 5 in Jackson Ward. The exhibition, a project of the Virginia Sexual and Domestic Violence Action Alliance, has been on tour throughout Virginia since April 2007. Artists range in age from 19 to 75 and represent a cross-section of America: college students, great-grandparents, military veterans, activists, artists, therapists, crisis-center staff and self-defense instructors. Some created their art shortly after they were assaulted; some waited more than 40 years. “The Art of Surviving,“ brought to Richmond by The YWCA of Richmond in collaboration with the Virginia Art Therapy Association, runs through March 25 at 200 W. “Creative Adventures” at Uptown Gallery  03/05/09 1:01 AM

‘Creative Adventures’ at Uptown Gallery       “Creative Adventures,“ featuring works by the Experimental Painters Group, is showing at Uptown Gallery artists cooperative. Visiting artist Vera Dickerson from Roanoke inspired the group, said spokeswoman Kathy Miller. In her workshop, Dickerson created abstract works with acrylic paints applied to sheets of yupo, a plastic. “She was the impetus,“ Miller said. After the workshop, Uptown artists continued to work with the technique. “They feed off each other and help each other enjoy the process.“ The show consists of about 40 works created with experimental techniques, such as texturing, scraping, collage, stamping and “twinning,“ or placing one piece of paper over another. Artists include Bev Perdue Jennings, Patrice Reese, Solange Brown, Pat Angevine and Emma Lou Martin. The show runs through March 28 at 1305 W. Harrison Street Coffee Shop presents photography exhibition  02/19/09 12:01 AM

Coffee shop features ‘Best of 2008 Photo Show’      Harrison Street Coffee Shop in the Fan District, a vegetarian-vegan coffee shop with a chalkboard menu, recently mounted “Best of 2008 Photo Show,“ which features 25 photographs by Richmond-based photographers. The show was curated by P.J. Sykes, whose works have appeared in national publications such as SPIN, Paste and Skyscraper Magazine. The subjects range from live music shows to landscapes, color to black-and-white, said manager Quillin Drew. All photos are framed and cost $50 to $100. Donations and profits go to photography-related programs at Art 180, a nonprofit organization that runs after-school art programs for children living in challenging circumstances in the city.
