Even to their fans, Redskins are a joke
In the past 30 years, the Washington Redskins have seen the best of times—three Super Bowl victories—and the worst of times, one playoff appearance between 1994 and 2004, including a 0-7 start in 1998 and a 0-5 start in 2001. Never did the players or the fans lose hope. The fans were steadfast in their belief things would improve.

Skins’ instability starts at the top
Almost everyone has an idea on how to fix the Washington Redskins, and many begin with firing Vinny Cerrato and hiring a “real” general manager. That idea misses the point. Cerrato, the executive vice president of football operations, is not the problem. Replacing him with a “real” general manager will not solve anything.

Gibbs flips opponent in match race
It may have been just for fun, but NASCAR team owner and Hall-of-Fame coach Joe Gibbs made good on his promise to refuse to lose in Friday night’s Arena Racing match race at the Hampton Coliseum. Gibbs started second in the one-on-one 10-lap race against friend and longtime team sponsor Norm Miller, chairman of Interstate Batteries. Gibbs fell back slightly at first, then caught Miller and bumped him a few times to the delight of the crowd of an estimated 4,000 fans—many wearing Washington Redskins gear.

Motorsports notes: Johnson named best of 2008; Gibbs says match race is “gonna be ugly”
CONCORD, N.C.—Jimmie Johnson, the three-time defending Sprint Cup champion, repeated as the SPEED Driver of the Year today. Former Indianapolis 500 winner Mario Andretti presented the award to Johnson during NASCAR’s pre-season media gathering. Others receiving votes for the award were Formula One champion Lewis Hamilton and Cup runner-up Carl Edwards.

Joe Gibbs is going to race Friday in Hampton. Gibbs, a NASCAR car owner and Hall of Fame National Football League coach, isn’t fielding a car for somebody else this time.

Joe Gibbs will race Friday in Virginia. Gibbs, a NASCAR car owner and Hall of Fame National Football League coach, isn’t fielding a car for somebody else this time. He will drive in a 20-lap Arena Racing match race against Norm Miller, chairman of Dallas-based Interstate Batteries, a longtime sponsor of Gibbs’ Sprint Cup operation. The event is part of Friday’s racing card at the Hampton Coliseum. Races start at 7:30 p.m. Arena Racing USA founder Ricky Dennis said the two match racers will be available to sign autographs before the race.
