Confederate’s descendants mark his grave in King George  10/09/09 12:01 AM

KING GEORGE—A King George County family has honored an ancestor, a Confederate soldier whose grave had been unmarked for more than 100 years. Seventeen descendants of Vinton A. Dickerson gathered around his final resting place and sang “Blest Be the Tie That Binds.“ In front of the four generations of family members stood a shiny, new granite marker, courtesy of the Department of Veterans Affairs.

When the sun goes down, members of the Padovan-Hickman family burn candles, flick on kerosene-powered lamps or don coal-miner lamps to see in their King George County log cabin. That’s because they don’t have electricity. They also don’t have a TV, computer or any other technical amenities - which some consider necessities - except for the mini DVD player they bought themselves at Christmas (and charge by car cigarette lighter).
