The term “opportunity cost” refers to benefits foregone, to the things that might have been. The price of a new pair of shoes might be $50; the opportunity cost is the purse the $50 could have bought instead. It is hard not to wonder about the opportunity cost to the citizens of Newport News imposed by the city’s ill-advised pursuit of a reservoir in King William. The city spent more than two decades and $55 million chasing its goal. At long last, after yet another setback, city officials wisely have decided to end the quest.

The King William Moose Lodge recently installed its new officers for 2009-2010. Lynn Barbour pulled the heart-monitor batteries out of their chargers and let out a heavy sigh. King William County’s Volunteer Fire & Rescue company had 40 of the batteries, which are the power source for defibrillators, the devices used to help people going through cardiac arrest. Now they’re down to 12, and those are fourto 10-year-old hand-medowns from another rescue squad.

KING WILLIAM Much of Leon and Barbara Brooks’ lives are stuffed inside two 40-foot containers in the front yard of the modest trailer they call home. The trailer was supposed to be temporary.

King William County is open for business. Government officials and members of King William’s business community hope to spread that message with the establishment of the county’s first chamber of commerce.
