Titans dash past Bird to win Dominion championship
Cosby High’s girls seem to have a gear other teams don’t have. Last night the Titans sped away from L.C. Bird early and never tapped the brakes en route to a 67-49 victory in the Dominion District final in the nearly packed Cosby gym. Cosby, now 24-1, will play host to Prince George in the first round of the Central Region tournament Monday (6 p.m.).

Boys: Cosby 58, No. 6 L.C. Bird 49
Matt Gorski had 21 points, 10 rebounds and three blocks as Cosby surprised No. 6 L.C. Bird. The Titans took control in the second quarter and headed into halftime up 26-23, then pulled away in the fourth quarter. David Robinson registered 18 points and Patrick McDaniel netted 10 for Cosby. The Skyhawks’ J’Quan Martin led all scorers with 22 points and 18 rebounds, and Darryl Johnston posted 10 points.

Girls: L.C. Bird 72, Manchester 58
Ruthanne Doherty scored 11 of her 26 points to spark L.C. Bird’s dominant first half, and the second-seeded Skyhawks defeated No. 3 Manchester 72-58 last night in the Dominion District semifinals. Porscha Walton had seven of her 10 points also before the half, and Doherty recorded 14 rebounds to go along with her game-high points. Toya Ricks added 12 points for the Skyhawks, and Barbara Sitton tallied 11 assists and six steals.

Girls: No. 4 L.C. Bird 48, Clover Hill 39
Senior Zukye Smith had her game of the season to lead the Skyhawks to victory. Smith scored 10 points, six in the fourth quarter, and collected 12 rebounds. Teammate Ruthanne Doherty had 11 points, 14 rebounds and two blocks, and Toya Ricks contributed 13 rebounds. The Skyhawks pulled away from the visiting Cavaliers in the fourth quarter.

Doherty leads No. 4 Skyhawks
Ruthanne Doherty had a double-double with 21 points and 18 rebounds as No. 4 L.C. Bird defeated Clover Hill 53-45 in Dominion District action last night. Toya Ricks added 10 points and seven rebounds for the Skyhawks. Kristen Sims scored 18 points for the Cavaliers, and Ryen Henry registered 10 points and nine rebounds. Skyhawks hold off Monarchs
Darryl Johnston scored 11 first-quarter points and Ken Pankey’s hot shooting did the rest for L.C. Bird, ranked No. 4 in the Times-Dispatch Top 10 Poll, in a 78-67 nondistrict victory over ninth-ranked Meadowbrook last night. Johnston finished with 17 points and his early offense staked the Skyhawks to a 10-point lead after one quarter. Pankey took it from there, scoring a game-high 29 points, hitting 11 of 14 shots, 4 of 6 from the 3-point line and 5 of 6 from the foul line. Rico Ferguson also hit double figures for the Skyhawks who led by 20 at halftime and cruised home.

Boys Athlete of the Week: J’Quan Martin, L.C. Bird
What he did: Martin, a 6-3 senior forward, has been a steady contributor to the sixth-ranked Skyhawks after missing the first two games of the season. He has scored in double figures in every game, including 26 against Thomas Dale and 20 vs. Dominion District foe Manchester last week. He also had nine rebounds and three blocks against Manchester and 14 rebounds against Dale. He continued his superlative play Wednesday night with 35 points and 15 rebounds in a victory over Huguenot. Age: 17 Three words your friends would use to describe you: “Funny, cool, laid back.“ Strengths: “Leadership, good inside presence, rebounding.“ I’m working to improve: “Shooting, ballhandling and defense.“ Toughest opponent other than yourself: “Coach [Chuck] Thomas.
