Boys Athlete of the Week: J’Quan Martin, L.C. Bird
What he did: Martin, a 6-3 senior forward, has been a steady contributor to the sixth-ranked Skyhawks after missing the first two games of the season. He has scored in double figures in every game, including 26 against Thomas Dale and 20 vs. Dominion District foe Manchester last week. He also had nine rebounds and three blocks against Manchester and 14 rebounds against Dale. He continued his superlative play Wednesday night with 35 points and 15 rebounds in a victory over Huguenot. Girls: No. 5 L.C. Bird 56, Clover Hill 35
No. 5 L.C. Bird defeated Clover Hill on the road in a Dominion district matchup. Barbara Sitton led the Skyhawks with 19 points. Despite being down 16-12 after one quarter, L.C. Bird made a 2nd quarter push and took a 32-19 lead into halftime. Ryen Henry led Clover Hill with 15 points and had seven rebounds. L.C. BIRD 56, CLOVER HILL 35

Girls: No. 7 Huguenot 51, No. 5 L.C. Bird 49
Trylanda Jennings scored 14 points, including four 3-pointers, as No. 7 Huguenot edged fifth-ranked L.C. Bird in Dominion District play. Jennings added nine rebounds and six steals, while Ty Bender had 13 points to go along with nine rebounds, five steals and two assists. Jewel Tunstell led the Skyhawks with 12 points followed by Ruthanne Doherty with 11.

Girls: No. 5 L.C. Bird 57, No. 1 Cosby 56
Barbara Sitton recorded 13 points, nine assists and five steals as No. 5 L.C. Bird defeated top-ranked Cosby in a Dominion District matchup. After trailing by a few points most of the game, the Titans scored the first six points of the fourth to take a 51-43 lead. The Skyhawks chipped away, with Sitton scoring five points to finish the game on a 14-5 run. Ruthanne Doherty (eight points) pulled down 17 boards and three steals, and Jewel Tunstell (10 rebounds) and Ayanna Tweedy each scored 10 points for Bird.
Boys: No. 6 L.C. Bird 49, Cosby 48
Darryl Johnston hit two key three pointers in the fourth quarter and Rico Ferguson hit a foul shot with four seconds remaining to give the Skyhawks a tight Dominion District win over the Titans. Johnston finished with 10 points and his second trifecta tied the game with a minute left to set up Ferugson’s heroics. Ken Pankey paced district-leading L.C. Bird with 16 points, 11 coming in the second half.

Boys: No. 6 L.C. Bird 81, Manchester 72
Darryl Johnston nailed six of 10 from the 3-point line and finished with a game-high 30 points to give the Skyhawks stayed unbeaten in the Dominion District with a win over the Lancers. Johnston made five of his trifectas in the first half to help sixth-ranked L.C. Bird to a 34-31 halftime edge. J’Quan Martin (20 points) picked up the slack in the second half with 14 points as the Skyhawks pulled away from the Lancers. Rico Ferguosn and Anthony Harris added 13 points for L.C. Bird

Girls: No. 3 L.C. Bird 60, Manchester 56 (OT)
Barbara Sitton scored 13 of her 21 points in the fourth quarter and overtime as L.C. Bird overcame an eight-point deficit to overturn Manchester 60-56 in the Dominion District Thursday night. Sitton scored eight points and Ruthanne Doherty six of her 15 in the final period as the Skyhawks, No. 3 in the T-D Top 10 Poll, used a 14-6 advantage to extend the game.

J’Quan Martin scored 12 of his 26 points in the second quarter to give L.C. Bird an 8-point lead at halftime, and the sixth-ranked Skyhawks defeated No. 5 Thomas Dale. Martin added 14 rebounds for a double-double and four blocks and four steals. Rico Ferguson (seven rebounds, five assists) scored 15 points and Ken Pankey netted 13 for L.C. Bird.

Ka’lia Johnson led all scorers with 27 points, seven assists and three steals as No. 2 Thomas Dale took down third-ranked L.C. Bird in overtime. The Knights were down by 5 with 25 seconds left in regulation when Taylor Bradley (seven points, 10 rebounds) hit a 3-pointer to cut the lead to 2. After fouling the Skyhawks and them missing the free throw, Thomas Dale came down the court to tie and send the game into the extra period. The teams traded baskets in overtime, led by Alyssa Frye scoring nine of her 17 points.

Doug Wilder—governor, mayor, rascal—is making history even when he isn’t. In 2000, Wilder briefly considered a federal judicial appointment. That Wilder declined a seat on the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, the nation’s most conservative, should not come as a surprise.

Cosby High School’s Lady Titans, showed why they are the top-ranked team in the Times-Dispatch Top 10 poll tonight with a 64-37 victory over the third-ranked L.C. Bird Skyhawks in the Times-Dispatch Invitational Tournament championship game.

Skyhawks survive a dud of a shootout
The L.C. Bird Skyhawks owe Barbara Sitton a big thank you. Sitton, a 5-4 senior point guard, took over a sleepwalker of a semifinal game against Atlee yesterday afternoon and guided the Skyhawks to a 50-43 victory and a berth in the Times-Dispatch Invitational final for the third consecutive year. The Skyhawks will play Dominion District mate Cosby in tomorrow’s final at 6:30 p.m. at Virginia Commonwealth University’s Siegel Center. Cosby advanced with a 63-23 victory over Deep Run.

Defense lifts Bird over Meadowbrook
Ruthanne Doherty scored 10 second-quarter points and helped key a dominant defensive effort that gave third-ranked L.C. Bird a 43-33 win over sixth-ranked Meadowbrook in last night’s first round of the Times-Dispatch Invitational Tournament.

L.C. Bird’s victory over Dominion District foe George Wythe was its fifth in a row since and opening-game loss. Ken Pankey paced the Skyhawks with 21 points. He received ample support from Rico Ferguson (16 points) and J’Quan Martin (10). Ferguson added seven rebounds and seven assists. Anthony Harris hauled in 11 rebounds. Michael Miles and Joel Simms scored 13 points each for the Bulldogs.
