U.Va. could meet its archnemesis—Duke—in lacrosse title game
Every obstacle they’ve encountered this season, they’ve cleared—except one. Duke. In men’s lacrosse, nothing has brought out the Virginia Cavaliers’ worst in 2009 like a date with the Blue Devils. Duke whipped U.Va. 15-10 during the regular season and 16-5 in the ACC tournament. Both teams are in Foxborough, Mass., this weekend, and a third meeting may occur Monday, on the game’s largest stage. For that to happen, though, each must win in today’s NCAA semifinals.

U.Va. tops Maryland
CHARLOTTESVILLE—He marveled when he heard the public address announcer tell the crowd it was witnessing the longest game in the history of Division I men’s lacrosse. Moments later, Brian Carroll made the day even more memorable for the University of Virginia. One minute into the seventh overtime—85 minutes into a game that was supposed to last 60—the right-handed Carroll fired a left-handed shot into the upper right corner of the cage yesterday. That spectacular goal gave top-ranked U.Va. a 10-9 sudden-death victory over No.9 Maryland before an emotionally drained crowd of 5,019 at Klockner Stadium.

Billings ties U.Va. lacrosse scoring record
STONY BROOK, N.Y. - Attackman Garrett Billings tied a school record with eight goals yesterday to lead Virginia’s undefeated men’s lacrosse team to a 20-10 triumph over Stony Brook. The victory was the Cavaliers’ third in as many starts. Billings got the Cavaliers off to a quick start with two goals in the opening five minutes as Virginia built a 5-0 lead late in the opening quarter. He tied the record set by Butch McCleary against Navy in 1958 and Doug Knight against Syracuse in 1996. Billings added three assists for a career-high 11 points, tied for third in program history.
