Meador’s 64 leads SunTrust State Open
MIDLOTHIAN—Josh Meador fired an 8-under 64 today to take the early first-round lead in the SunTrust State Open at Independence Golf Club. The Mechanicsville native shook close his inward half with three straight birdies, including a 15-footer on No. 18. “I made a couple of more putts that I usually do,“ said Meador, who won here two years ago. “I made some good shots that I wasn’t expecting.“Meador, who failed to make the cut in 2009 after first-round 77, holds a one-shot lead over two-time champion Faber Jamerson of Appomattox. Jamerson, who polished off his round with five birdies in a row, turned in a 64 on the 7,127-yard course that has yielded several good scores.

Bostic, Smith big winners in RGA
The golf course at Richmond Country Club wasn’t so nice to Jeff Bostic the first time he tried to qualify for a tournament there. When Corbin Smith was in high school at Benedictine, RCC was the golf team’s home course. Smith, 25, hadn’t seen it since until he played a practice round last week for the Richmond Golf Association Men’s Amateur Championship, which began yesterday.

13-year-old Anderson rolls into RWGA semifinals
Thirteen-year-old Lyberty Anderson, a seventh-grader at Bailey Bridge Middle School, played the first nine holes in 4-under par today and rolled to a 5 and 4 victory over former champion and pre-tournament favorite Boodie McGurn in the quarterfinal round of the RWGA city amateur golf playoffs.
Easterly, McGinnis Anderson advance in RWGA
Five-time RWGA champion Natalie Easterly gives her putting line a worm’s-eye look during a first-round match with Angie Nguyen. Four-time RWGA champion Boodie McGurn missed this putt but rolled to victory over Margaret McGehee. Next up is medalist Lyberty Anderson. Experience is a valuable but at times fickle ally. Just ask Natalie Easterly and Maggie Balch. Experience helped rescue five-time former champion Easterly during the first day of the Richmond Women’s Golf Association tournament match play at Salisbury Country Club. But it left three-time winner Balch to fend for herself.

Anderson, 13, wins another RWGA qualifying medal
Lyberty Anderson, a 13-year-old seventh-grader from Bailey Bridge Middle School, shot 1-under-par 71 today at Salisbury Country Club to win a second consecutive RWGA city amateur qualifying medal. Anderson played her first four holes in 4-under (par, eagle, birdie, birdie). The absence of defending champion Kristine Rohrbaugh means that Anderson will carry the No. 1 seed into tomorrow’s first round of match play.—Vic Dorr

Defending champ to pass on RWGA
This much is certain about the 2009 Richmond Women’s Golf Association city amateur tournament: Kristine Rohrbaugh won’t win back-to-back championships. Rohrbaugh, the William and Mary sophomore-to-be who defeated four-time champion Boodie McGurn in the 2008 final, won’t participate in next week’s event at Salisbury Country Club. She’ll compete, instead, in the prestigious women’s Eastern Amateur, which will take place June 10-12 on the Wintergreeen Resort’s Stoney Creek course.
