The Federal Club files Chapter 11  10/28/09 2:44 PM

The Federal Club, one of the Richmond area’s premier golf clubs, has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. The club’s centerpiece is a $9 million course designed by Arnold Palmer. The upscale housing development known as Mountain Run that surrounds the course is included in the protection request. The course opened three years ago off Route 33 in Hanover County. The filing shows the list of assets to be less than $50,000 and liabilities between $1-10 million. The company, Mountain Run Golf Inc., owes $4.96 million to unsecured creditors. Many of the creditors are in Richmond.—Arthur Utley

Officials prepare for RIR traffic rerouting next week  04/24/09 12:00 AM

The Henrico County Department of Public Works will modify traffic patterns on major routes to Richmond International Raceway in preparation for next weekend’s NASCAR events. The temporary changes should help minimize traffic congestion during the races. Motorists should expect heavy traffic and delays all day May 2 and May 3 in the raceway area, especially from 8 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. before the races and 10:15 p.m. to 2:30 a.m. after the races.

Man charged in North Richmond fatal shooting  04/02/09 12:01 AM

Richmond police arrested a man yesterday in connection with the shooting of two people Tuesday in the city’s North Side. Solly R. Robinson Jr., 30, of the 700 block of Rex Avenue has been charged with conspiracy to commit murder in the shooting death of Everett Fairbanks Adams, who lived in the 2700 block of Midlothian Turnpike. Police found Adams, 56, and a woman in the 600 block of Henrico Boulevard, near Moss Side Avenue, at about 2:40 p.m. Tuesday. Both had been shot. They were taken to VCU Medical Center, where Adams died. The woman’s injuries are not life-threatening, police said.

Allen B. Fine was a man in motion—except when he was fishing. When he wasn’t in the industrial surroundings of Virginia Bearings and Supply Co. as its president, he raced cars and sailboats, flew small planes and searched for thermals in sailplanes, enjoyed skiing and played tennis as often as five times a week. He was a co-founder of the Virginia Motor Sports Club and served as president for a year. He was a Porsche man, though he collected other classic race cars, including Alfa Romeo and Lotus, said his daughter, Allyn Fine Linas of Goochland County.

Amelia man hurt in shooting; 2 arrested  04/01/09 12:01 AM

An Amelia County man was flown to VCU Medical Center after he was injured in a shooting yesterday in Amelia. Francis Manuel, 20, was listed in stable condition last night, said Investigator I. McDonald with the Amelia Sheriff’s Office. Manuel’s friends drove him to the Amelia Health Care Center after the shooting, which occurred at about 1 p.m., McDonald said. Authorities received a tip that a suspect was seen leaving in a vehicle. After a short chase, authorities arrested two people at 2 p.m., McDonald said.

Caroline County man charged with assaulting deputies  03/25/09 12:01 AM

Four Caroline County sheriff’s deputies were assaulted in a courtroom yesterday about 12:50 p.m., authorities said. Stacy J. St. Julian, 39, of Woodford was being tried on a domestic-assault charge in Caroline Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court. After he was convicted and sentenced, St. Julian became violent when being led from the courtroom, according to a news release from Caroline Sheriff A.A. “Tony” Lippa Jr. When deputies attempted to place him into custody, he struck several of them, authorities said.

Danny H. Gentry, 52, died after being taken to the hospital, Chesterfield County police said.

Chesterfield School Board considers efficiency review  03/11/09 12:01 AM

The Chesterfield County school system is considering having the state conduct an efficiency review of its noninstructional operations. Last night, the county’s School Board discussed whether to request participation in the Virginia School Efficiency Review Program run by the state’s Department of Budget and Planning. The department hires an independent consultant to look at possible efficiencies in areas such as human resources, finance, purchasing, special education, transportation, technology management and food services. The goal is for recommended savings to go into instruction.

Crashes on Virginia highways fatal to four  03/09/09 1:01 AM

A 23-year-old man, one of 10 passengers in a minivan, died at a Wythe County hospital early yesterday after the van rolled three times on Interstate 77 in Bland County. Virginia State Police said Jose Luis Rivas Morales of Alvarez, Mexico, died shortly before 2 a.m. at Wytheville Community Hospital. Morales was not wearing a seat belt, police said.

Petersburg School Board passes draft budget  03/05/09 1:01 AM

The Petersburg School Board last night unanimously voted to approve a draft $50.4 million operating budget to submit to the City Council. The budget eliminates 22 teaching positions, the majority of which are vacant. Before the board’s vote, Petersburg schools Superintendent James M. Victory said, “Because this is a very fluid budgetary process, and [because] there are still several unknowns that may potentially impact final decisions, we reserve the right to continually adjust this draft document as necessary.“

A Christian-based group home is being developed in Amelia County. Edna’s Place will serve as a haven for women and children who are victims of abuse, drug and alcohol addiction, and divorce. It primarily will serve Amelia and surrounding localities such as Nottoway, Goochland and Powhatan counties. “Whoever wants to get a second start at life,“ said Maggie Hill, president of the group behind the project, Edna’s Place Inc. “Our goal is to help the women get a new start on life.“

Underage parties lead to 23 arrests  02/11/09 12:01 AM

The Hanover County Sheriff’s Office said a pair of underage parties last weekend resulted in the arrests of 23 people on alcohol charges. The first incident occurred Sunday at about 1:30 a.m. in the 17300 block of Tyler Station Road in the Beaverdam area. Six juveniles and seven adults were arrested. Also Sunday, at about 4 a.m., officers responded to the 6300 block of Midnight Drive in the Mechanicsville area. Six juveniles and four adults were arrested.

King William man killed in crash on I-295  02/04/09 12:01 AM

A King William County man was fatally injured in a single-vehicle crash Monday night on Interstate 295 in Henrico County. Virginia State Police trooper T.M. Howard said Marvin Delano Blake, 42, died at VCU Medical Center early yesterday, several hours after the 10:45 p.m. crash. Howard said Blake was driving south on I-295 when his station wagon struck a support pillar for an overhead sign near the state Route 156 exit.
