Conlan Cassidy’s eight tackles and three deflections, and Zac Blackwell’s five tackles and two sacks helped unranked James River beat No. 8 Manchester to 16 points as the Rapids (2-2 Dominion, 3-2) upset the Lancers (2-1, 3-2). James River’s Jessie Wells blocked a punt on the Manchester 26-yard-line to set up the Rapids’ third score, a 1-yard TD run by twin brother Josh.

High school notes  10/01/09 12:01 AM

Atlee’s defense had given up just 33 points in three games going into last Friday’s encounter with Douglas Freeman, which was 0-2 and had scored only three touchdowns in its two games. The Rebels knocked off then-No.10 Atlee 34-31 in overtime thanks in part to the contributions of junior quarterback Mac Hudgins, who threw for three touchdowns and ran for two, including the game-winner in OT.

Johnson lifts Manchester  09/26/09 12:01 AM

Manchester linebacker Kyle Johnson got his right thumb caught in a facemask last week. It bent so far back that Lancers coach Tom Hall said it looked like a fish hook. “I’ve seen two childbirths,“ Hall said, “and this was as bad.“ It didn’t keep Johnson from getting a thumbs-up on his performance last night. Playing with a bandaged hand, the senior came up with two turnovers that got the ninth-ranked Lancers started toward what became a 41-14 Dominion District victory over visiting Monacan.
