3 from Richmond area complete Army basic training
Army Pvt. Chidozie J. Anyalewechi, Army Pvt. April Y. Milton and Army Pfc. Keisha E. Smithers have graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C. During nine weeks of training, they studied the Army mission, history, tradition and core values, physical fitness, and received instruction and practice in basic combat skills, military weapons, chemical warfare and bayonet training, drill and ceremony, marching, rifle marksmanship, armed and unarmed combat, map reading, field tactics, military courtesy, military justice system, basic first aid, foot marches, and field training exercises.

Chelsea Coward totaled 23 points and 12 rebounds as the Hanover Hawks held off a determined Deep Run 55-50 last night. Kim Browning added 11 points and pulled down 13 boards for the Hawks, who never trailed. The Deep Run Wildcats, ranked eighth in the T-D Top 10 Poll, were led by Jena Baldaino. She scored 19 points and hit all four of her 3s down the stretch in the second half. Amy Turner had 13 points.

Boys and Girls: Falcons cruise past Rapids; other games
Corey Sheppard recorded a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds as Huguenot defeated visiting James River 81-46 last night. David Brown totaled 13 points, six rebounds, nine assists and five steals for the Falcons, ranked No. 3 in the T-D Top 10 Poll. Sheppard added five assists. Juan Wilson registered 15 points, two assists and blocked four shots and Johnathan Crawley pulled down nine boards and six blocked shots.

PETERSBURG Crystal Smith sank two free throws with six seconds left in the game to clinch Meadowbrook’s seasonand Central District-opening victory over the Crimson Wave. The Monarchs led by five or six points for most of the game before Petersburg battled back to take a two-point lead early in the fourth quarter. Meadowbrook regained the lead and held on despite missing numerous free throws (10 for 22 in the game) down the stretch. Meadowbrook led 49-48 when Smith stepped to the line.

Thank you Vic Williams,“ Varina coach Stu Brown said after the Blue Devils defeated Meadowbrook 17-14 on a cold afternoon at Varina.
