Football: Meadowbrook 36, Highland Springs 32  09/12/09 12:14 AM

Troy Taylor was emotionally drained. The sweat on his face glistened from the glow of the Friday night lights. He had nothing left to give, but he could hardly conceal his ecstasy. Moments earlier, the final horn had sounded ending the wild and wooly non-district matchup between Meadowbrook and Highland Springs, and his Monarchs had battled their way to a 36-32 victory on the road.

High school notes: Taylor returns to Meadowbrook as football coach  07/21/09 12:01 AM

After seven years as a high school assistant football coach at L.C. Bird (one year) and Meadowbrook, Troy Taylor was antsy to be a head coach. Taylor left Group AAA, Division 6 Meadowbrook for Group A, Division 1 Amelia County last season. The Raiders featured one of the area’s top running backs, Tyrell Banks, and finished 5-5. Little did Taylor know it would be his only year at Amelia. His boss at Meadowbrook, Bill Bowles, retired, and Taylor, 30, is back at Meadowbrook as the head coach.

Central Region track, day one  05/23/09 12:01 AM

A girl named Powell won the pole vault and still holds the Central Region track and field meet record. The first name changed, however. Lizzie Powell of Patrick Henry vaulted 12-1 yesterday afternoon at Sports Backers Stadium and surpassed the mark of 12-0 set by her sister, Annie, in 2007. Powell finished ahead of Cameron Overstreet of Atlee. Powell’s expected duel with Atlee’s Emma DeJarnette never got off the ground. DeJarnette no-heighted and aborted several approaches.
