Ownby propels U.Va. soccer to finals  12/12/09 12:01 AM

CARY, N.C.—Doctors have told Brian Ownby he can’t play more than a half hour of soccer. Last night, he made that time count. The Deep Run grad scored the game-winning goal in overtime for a 2-1 victory against Wake Forest that will send Virginia to the College Cup finals for the first time in more than a decade. Earlier this year, Ownby was on track for a stellar sophomore season. He started it by playing for the United States in the U20 World Cup in Egypt. But he was bothered by a nagging groin injury.

U.Va. notes  11/12/09 12:01 AM

When the men’s basketball team tips off its season tomorrow night, the Hoos will be extremely thin at the forward position. On Saturday, Assane Sene was suspended by coach Tony Bennett for the first three games for conduct detrimental to the team. Then yesterday, Jamil Tucker announced he was taking an indefinite leave of absence from the team. The situation is further hampered by a foot injury to Mike Scott, though Bennett said Scott could be cleared to play against Longwood tomorrow night.

Ex-Tech coach Weiss may have violated NCAA rules  08/26/09 12:01 AM

It now seems clearer as to why Oliver Weiss surprisingly resigned as the Virginia Tech men’s soccer coach in June. And it has become crystal clear why Athletic Director Jim Weaver has said Tech wants more Americans in the men’s soccer program. According to documents obtained by The Roanoke Times under the Virginia Freedom of Information Act, Virginia Tech has reported 11 violations to the NCAA regarding the recruitment of eight foreign men’s soccer players.
