The top two girls cross country teams in the Central Region had mixed results in invitationals last weekend. No.2 Maggie Walker Governor’s School girls won the William and Mary Invitational by 65 points over Lafayette on the new 3.19-mile (longer) course at Eastern State Hospital in Williamsburg. The Green Dragons totaled 30 points with race winner Clarissa Schick (19:39) leading the way. Anna Spiers (20:20) was third, Caroline Newcomb (20:58) sixth, Kelsey Green (21:00) eighth and Emily Bird (21:21) 12th.

Football: James River 21, Midlothian 6  09/19/09 12:08 AM

Josh Wells was 7 of 10 passing for 119 yards and a TD, and he tallied 62 yards on nine carries to lead the Rapids over the Trojans in a Dominion District showdown. Wells’ twin brother Jesse led the James River offense with nine tackles and a blocked extra point attempt. Midlothian (0-1, 0-2) got off to a good start with Charles Poindexter’s 6-yard TD run in the first quarter, but James River’s Matt Brooks (3 carries, 73 yards and a TD) twice picked off Jimmy Whitten (15 of 30 for 148 yards) to slow the pace.

Football: Powhatan 30, Midlothian 0  09/11/09 10:48 PM

POWHATAN—Landon Bradley ran for 128 yards and two touchdowns, and the Powhatan defense held visiting Midlothian to 106 yards total offense in an opening night victory. The teams played each other for the first time since 1985. Bradley carried all six times for 66 yards for the Indians’ first TD. Dion Berry contributed 74 yards on eight carries.
