Dick Crews of Chesterfield County saw this albino male deer in his backyard in the Salisbury subdivision in Midlothian. Tax increase would fund Midlothian Turnpike project
If Chesterfield Towne Center-area business owners want the middle of Midlothian Turnpike to be beautiful, they’ll need to pay more in taxes. The Chesterfield County Board of Supervisors this month will consider a proposal to increase the property-tax rate for businesses along the mile-and-a-half stretch of Midlothian by 2 cents per $100 of assessed value.

Midlothian man’s Kenya trip shows rewards of voluntourism
MOMBASA, Kenya Matt Reinhardt didn’t know what to do when his company asked him to take two weeks of unpaid vacation to cut costs. His first thought was to head to the beach. The Midlothian resident thought maybe he would travel to Mexico with his wife, Dina, twins Libby and Reed, 3, and son Owen, 4. But this was an unexpected vacation, and Reinhardt wanted to do something meaningful.

Cantor to sponsor Chesterfield jobs fair Monday
More than 50 businesses will participate in a jobs fair sponsored by Rep. Eric I. Cantor, R-7th, Monday at Clover Hill High School in Chesterfield County. “In these tough economic times, Virginia’s families are struggling,“ said Cantor, the House minority whip. “We all need to do what we can so people can get back to work.“ Cantor said job seekers, in addition to meeting with industry representatives, will have the opportunity to attend seminars on résumé writing, interviewing skills, searching for jobs and accessing unemployment benefits.

Dancing the key to Chesterfield zoning case
Nicole Bailey can’t dance. It’s not that she lacks the skills or desire, it’s that Chesterfield County zoning doesn’t allow it any longer—for now. Bailey, 32, is a regular at Murphy’s Law II, a restaurant and bar in a shopping center off Spring Run Road near Hull Street Road. She lives in the neighborhood and used to drop in every Friday night with her husband to shake a leg.

Mid-lothian Mines Park to get new features
One of Chesterfield County’s historical claims to fame is getting a modern makeover. Mid-Lothian Mines Park opened in 2004 to pay tribute to the first commercial mining operation in North America. Over the next two years, the park will see a few features added to boost interest in county history. The 44-acre site displays the remnants of mining operations built after coal was discovered there in 1701.

New Gold’s Gym getting an image change
Around here, we think of Gold’s Gym as a fitness center tucked in the corner of a shopping center like Willow Lawn or created to fit in an older building like the one in the Fan. Clearly, we need to think again. The new Gold’s at Westchester Commons in Midlothian is about as shiny and state-of-the-art as any gym in town.

Chesterfield mother gets 185 days for DUI with unbuckled child
A Chesterfield County mother who ran a red light at 80 mph and nearly crashed into several cars while driving drunk with her unbuckled infant in the car was sentenced yesterday to 185 days in jail. Daphne N. Holt, 25, pleaded guilty in Chesterfield Circuit Court to felony child endangerment and driving under the influence, her third DUI conviction since 2003.

Midlothian resident graduates from Texas Christian
Jessica Gayle Inlow of Midlothian successfully completed degree requirements at Texas Christian University in Fort Worth. Inlow majored in habilitation of the deaf and received a bachelor of science degree. More than 1,300 graduates were honored May 9 at commencement exercises in Daniel Meyer Coliseum on the TCU campus.

Eagles, Raiders will meet in girls soccer final
Mills Godwin’s girls soccer team will soon visit the State Group AAA tournament for the seventh time in as many years. Few of those trips have been as sweet, or as improbable, as the latest. Godwin forward Marie Krider scored off Anne Lumpkin’s corner kick with 2:00 remaining in the first sudden-death overtime to lift the Eagles to a 2-1 victory over Thomas Dale in the second of last night’s Central Region semifinals.

‘Supernanny’ filming in Midlothian
In Midlothian, someone’s behavior is very naughty. The ABC reality show “Supernanny” is filming its first episode in Virginia in Chesterfield County. Cameras, crew and no-nonsense nanny Jo Frost will be in a Midlothian-area subdivision through Sunday. Now in its fifth season, the show features a weekly family in need of help raising their children. Frost, who began the show in her native England, comes in and observes the family’s procedures and makes recommendations. A week or so later, she returns to see if her ideas have resulted in improvements.

Former Chesterfield teacher accused of assaulting students is acquitted
Former Chesterfield County science teacher Patrick H. Simmons said he plans to teach again after his acquittal yesterday on charges that he assaulted three Tomahawk Creek Middle School students by pushing them against a wall during a fire drill.
