Midlothian studio casting for film roles
Alocal multimedia production company is casting roles for a short film to be shot locally next month. Iconograph Inc., based in Midlothian, is behind the tentatively titled “Kitsune,“ a film set in Japan during World War II. Auditions will be held Saturday at Iconograph’s main office.

Bowling notes: Three region stops set for state in spring
The non-titlists event is scheduled for King Pin Lanes on March 26-28, with pro-ams at 6 and 8 p.m. starting the event March 26. Qualifying is set for March 27 with squads at 8 a.m. and 2 p.m. to determine the semifinal field for March 28 at 8 a.m. Match play will follow at 11 a.m. The projected top prize is $2,500. Mr. Tomney, who also had run Luray Bowling Lanes from 1958 to 1966, was inducted into the game’s shrine in May.

Expansion doubles size of Midlothian YMCA
Midlothian fitness fanatics now have more room to stretch. The Midlothian Family YMCA, which opened in 1995, has doubled its size from 26,000 to 52,000 square feet and now has a host of additions for its 8,000 members. The upgraded Y at Coalfield and Woolridge roads boasts a 7,000-square-foot fitness center; a full-size gym; a children’s center; music, aerobics and massage studios; an intergenerational center and more.

No charges expected for officer in pedestrian’s death
No charges are expected against an off-duty Richmond police officer who fatally struck a pedestrian early New Year’s Day as the man was walking home after leaving Mulligan’s Sports Grille in Midlothian. The victim, David B. Apple, 40, had been drinking earlier and had abandoned his vehicle sometime after leaving the bar, authorities said.

Dale, Midlothian to vie for girls title
Thomas Dale’s girls basketball team is difficult enough to defend when the opposition can focus on preventing point guard Ka’lia Johnson from penetrating to the basket. When the Knights are hitting shots from the perimeter, they’re all but unstoppable. Mills Godwin found that out the hard way in the first Times-Dispatch Invitational Tournament semifinal yesterday at the Siegel Center.

Tax increase would fund Midlothian Turnpike project
If Chesterfield Towne Center-area business owners want the middle of Midlothian Turnpike to be beautiful, they’ll need to pay more in taxes. The Chesterfield County Board of Supervisors this month will consider a proposal to increase the property-tax rate for businesses along the mile-and-a-half stretch of Midlothian by 2 cents per $100 of assessed value.

Midlothian man’s Kenya trip shows rewards of voluntourism
MOMBASA, Kenya Matt Reinhardt didn’t know what to do when his company asked him to take two weeks of unpaid vacation to cut costs. His first thought was to head to the beach. The Midlothian resident thought maybe he would travel to Mexico with his wife, Dina, twins Libby and Reed, 3, and son Owen, 4. But this was an unexpected vacation, and Reinhardt wanted to do something meaningful.

More than 50 businesses will participate in a jobs fair sponsored by Rep. Eric I. Cantor, R-7th, Monday at Clover Hill High School in Chesterfield County. “In these tough economic times, Virginia’s families are struggling,“ said Cantor, the House minority whip. “We all need to do what we can so people can get back to work.“ Cantor said job seekers, in addition to meeting with industry representatives, will have the opportunity to attend seminars on résumé writing, interviewing skills, searching for jobs and accessing unemployment benefits.

Dancing the key to Chesterfield zoning case
Nicole Bailey can’t dance. It’s not that she lacks the skills or desire, it’s that Chesterfield County zoning doesn’t allow it any longer—for now. Bailey, 32, is a regular at Murphy’s Law II, a restaurant and bar in a shopping center off Spring Run Road near Hull Street Road. She lives in the neighborhood and used to drop in every Friday night with her husband to shake a leg.

Mid-lothian Mines Park to get new features
One of Chesterfield County’s historical claims to fame is getting a modern makeover. Mid-Lothian Mines Park opened in 2004 to pay tribute to the first commercial mining operation in North America. Over the next two years, the park will see a few features added to boost interest in county history. The 44-acre site displays the remnants of mining operations built after coal was discovered there in 1701.

New Gold’s Gym getting an image change
Around here, we think of Gold’s Gym as a fitness center tucked in the corner of a shopping center like Willow Lawn or created to fit in an older building like the one in the Fan. Clearly, we need to think again. The new Gold’s at Westchester Commons in Midlothian is about as shiny and state-of-the-art as any gym in town.

Chesterfield mother gets 185 days for DUI with unbuckled child
A Chesterfield County mother who ran a red light at 80 mph and nearly crashed into several cars while driving drunk with her unbuckled infant in the car was sentenced yesterday to 185 days in jail. Daphne N. Holt, 25, pleaded guilty in Chesterfield Circuit Court to felony child endangerment and driving under the influence, her third DUI conviction since 2003.
