Godwin eliminated in state girls volleyball tournament  11/20/09 12:01 AM

Another strong postseason run came to an end quicker than the Mills Godwin girls volleyball wanted it to come. Loudoun Valley, the Northwest Region champions, turned back the Eagles 25-20, 23-25, 25-21, 26-24 last night in the Virginia High School League Group AAA tournament at the Siegel Center. Loudoun Valley (22-5) will play Northern Region champion South County of Lorton (25-3) in tomorrow’s final at 2:30 p.m. South County eliminated Eastern Region winner Cox of Virginia Beach in five sets in the opening semifinal.

Coach’s strategy pays off for Godwin  11/18/09 12:01 AM

Emily Rebuck is a 5-5 freshman on the Mills Godwin girls volleyball team and sees ample playing time as a defensive specialist for the Central Region champion Eagles. She found herself in a situation she termed scary last night in the Virginia High School League state Group AAA tournament quarterfinal match against Princess Anne of Virginia Beach at Godwin.

Girls volleyball rivalry to add chapter  11/17/09 12:01 AM

The “Oh, no, not you again” scenario takes center stage in the state Group AAA girls volleyball tournament quarterfinals tonight at Frank Cox High in Virginia Beach. That’s where Central Region runner-up Deep Run (16-9) will take on the Eastern Region champion Falcons (23-2) at 7 p.m. Central Region champion Mills Godwin (20-5) plays host to Eastern runner-up Princess Anne (21-5) at 7.

Douglas Freeman had five possessions inside Mills Godwin’s 5 yard line, but only came away with six points as the Eagles came away with the one-point victory. Derek Whitaker rushed for 87 yards on 20 carries and a score as Mills Godwin ended the season at 4-3 in the Colonial and 5-5 overall. Mac Hudgins went 14-for-21 for 208 yards, a touchdown and an interception as the Rebels fell to 1-6 and 2-8.

Girls volleyball: Mills Godwin defends Central Region title with sweep  11/14/09 12:01 AM

Time after time, Mills Godwin sent the ball back over the net. Too many times, Deep Run responded with a hitting error or mishandled a serve receive. As the mistakes mounted, so did the points for the Eagles, who successfully defended their Central Region girls volleyball title last night at Cosby with a 25-21, 25-17, 25-16 victory the Wildcats.

Central Region volleyball finals set for tonight  11/13/09 12:01 AM

The Central Region boys and girls volleyball tournament finals will be played tonight at Cosby High School. Dominion District rivals Cosby and Clover Hill play for the sixth time this season in the boys championship match, which starts at 5:30 p.m. Both teams advance to the state Group AAA tournament semifinals Wednesday at the Siegel Center against Eastern Region representatives Great Bridge and First Colonial.

Central Region volleyball matches postponed  11/12/09 2:22 PM

The boys and girls volleyball Central Region championship matches set for tonight have been rescheduled for Friday. The boys match between Cosby and Clover Hill will take place at 5:30 p.m. The girls match between Mills Godwin and Deep Run will start at 7:30 p.m. Both matches will be played at Cosby High School.

James River’s season-long goal to reach the Central Region girls volleyball tournament final and gain a berth in the state tournament will go unfulfilled. Mills Godwin got in the way again. The Eagles (19-5) eliminated the Rapids (20-4) for the third year in a row last night at Cosby. Mills Godwin won in five games: 24-26, 25-15, 25-18, 23-25, 15-13. The Eagles, the defending region champions, are back in tomorrow night’s 7:30 title game. They play Colonial District rival Deep Run, which halted a hot Cosby team 25-21, 25-20, 25-17.

Boys cross country: Richardson outlasts Pollock

He blew through the finish line at Pole Green Park late yesterday afternoon, then decelerated, then slowed to a walk as a meet official recorded his race number. Once he reached the end of the chute, Ted Richardson of James River, the newly minted Central Region cross country champion, turned and paused for a moment as runner-up Grant Pollock of Mills Godwin approached.

Football: Mills Godwin 24, Deep Run 16  11/06/09 11:20 PM

Jordan Kocen had 11 tackles, a sack and returned an interception for a score as Mills Godwin (3-3, 4-5) defeated Deep Run (4-2, 5-4) in a Colonial District matchup. David Caravati tallied 15 tackles, forced a fumble, recovered a fumble and broke up a pass for the Eagles, and Dane Forlines was 4 of 10 passing for 105 yards. Deep Run’s Kenny Williams was 12 of 25 for 147 yards passing and two TDs, and Holden Bass hauled in seven catches for 96 yards and a score.

Field Hockey: Cosby, Dale advance to finals  11/05/09 12:01 AM

A timeout did the trick for the Cosby field hockey team. The Titans trailed Mills Godwin midway through the first half of their Central Region tournament semifinal last night at Clover Hill. The Eagles were playing their game and had taken the Titans out of theirs. “We got our heads back in it and started playing like we knew how to play field hockey,“ Cosby midfielder Kelsey Powell said.

Matt Boegner had six kills and seven digs and Aaron Rebuck contributed 16 assists in Mills Godwin’s sweep of Hermitage in the Colonial District tournament. Hayley Stough scored twice to lift Mills Godwin over Maggie Walker GS in the Colonial District tournament. Erin Bailey made eight saves for the Eagles, who will play in the first round of the regional tournament Monday at 4 p.m. against host Atlee. Cassie Turnage scored for the Green Dragons, and Virginia Young and Caitlin Riblett combined to stop 4 shots. Maggie Walker GS also plays Monday at home against Lee-Davis at 5.

Football: Mills Godwin 36, Thomas Jefferson 12  10/23/09 10:56 PM

Dane Forlines passed for two touchdowns and Derek Whitaker ran for two to lead the Eagles to a Colonial District victory. Dylan Forlines led Mills Godwin (2-2, 3-4) on the ground with 86 yards and a touchdown on six carries. David Carabati led the defense with 12 tackles, four tackles for loss, one fumble recovery and two sacks. Quarterback Marvin Robinson completed 21-of-38 passes for 289 yards and two touchdowns for Thomas Jefferson (0-4, 0-7). Darius Simpson had five catches for 128 yards and a score.
