Mills Godwin loses girls state soccer final  06/08/09 12:01 AM

+ CHANTILLY—Somewhere along the line, Mills Godwin girls soccer coach Ali Toole gave up. In her first year as coach, she decided she would get the players to follow a strict schedule during practices and warm-ups for games. But on a team of free spirits, it never quite took. “They’re just so . . . silly,“ Toole said. “I tried to get them regimented, but they resisted it.“

Godwin’s Parker falls in state final  06/07/09 12:01 AM

In his final high school tennis match, Kyle Parker fought through a pulled stomach muscle, switched shirts after sweating through the first one and survived a tension-filled tiebreaker in the second set. What he couldn’t do, however, was contain two hot streaks from Justin Shane, which the J.E.B. Stuart-Fairfax senior rode to a 6-2, 6-7 (7-3), 6-4 victory in yesterday’s state tennis championship.

Godwin reaches state boys soccer final  06/07/09 12:01 AM

The Mills Godwin boys soccer team has been wearing red uniforms for a while. The whites have been in the closet because that’s the uniform that the home team—the favorite—gets to wear. This hasn’t been a problem for the Eagles, just as it wasn’t yesterday as they defeated Hickory-Chesapeake 2-0 to advance to the state final. “I like being the underdog,“ senior Garrett Harvey said. “All these teams come in and think, ‘Oh, we can beat these guys.‘ Then we surprise them.“

They’ll also play each other—for the first time—in tonight’s Central Region title game. Early rainstorms last night created tough conditions early.
