Historian to speak at UR on Civil War-eraWhite Houses
White House historian William Seale will give a lecture next week at the University of Richmond on the White Houses and presidents during the Civil War. Seale, who is the author of “The President’s House: A History,“ will discuss on Thursday Presidents Abraham Lincoln and Jefferson Davis and the White Houses in which they lived. The focus of the talk is social and cultural history of the two presidents, not just the Civil War.

Museum of Confederacy plans Appomattox expansion
The Museum of the Confederacy—in Richmond since its inception—definitely is coming to Appomattox, museum and town officials say, but it may take a little longer than first anticipated because of fundraising issues. Thursday, the museum’s board of trustees voted to continue moving forward with plans to build an expansion site near where the Civil War ended.

Museum of the Confederacy director committed to expansion
The place where the Civil War came to an end is where the Museum of the Confederacy intends to begin sharing what it calls the world’s most extensive collection of Confederate artifacts. While the sour economy has slowed fundraising, the museum’s executive director said he is committed to creating a statewide museum system at historically significant locations, starting in central Virginia where Robert E. Lee surrendered to Ulysses S. Grant on Easter Sunday 1865.

Private session on Appomattox museum plan denied
The head of the Museum of the Confederacy wanted to talk privately with the Appomattox County Board of Supervisors on Monday night about plans to build a satellite museum in Appomattox, but the board declined. S. Waite Rawls III, president and CEO of the Richmond-based museum, had come to town to update the supervisors. He asked to speak to the supervisors in closed session, but the board chairman said no.

Confederacy museum deal in limbo
The real estate deal that ultimately would provide land for the Museum of the Confederacy in Appomattox still hangs in limbo, nearly nine months after it was announced. The proposal is for the town of Appomattox to purchase four acres near U.S. 460 and state Route 24 for $325,000. The land would be leased to the museum for a nominal charge.
