Music notes: Local acts making some noise
Local alt-rockers Conditions just signed with the new independent label Good Fight Music and are recording their full-length debut in Baltimore with Paul Leavitt, who has worked with Senses Fail and All Time Low. The band plays SXSW in Austin this weekend and will be on board the Vans Warped Tour this summer, which stops at Virginia Beach Amphitheater on July 21. Jack Johnson’s new studio release, “To the Sea,“ doesn’t arrive until June 1, but he’s already announced tour dates, including a July 16 stop at Virginia Beach Amphitheater (on sale April 10). Johnson is donating 100 percent of tour profits to the more than 150 community groups that are part of his All At Once Community charity organization. . . . Green Day is expected to embark on another U.S. tour, starting Aug. 3 in New Jersey.

Music notes: Grace Potter and Robert Randolph to play Brown’s Island
This year’s Dominion Riverrock festival at Brown’s Island will feature the music of Grace Potter and the Nocturnals on May 14 and Robert Randolph and the Family Band on May 15. The “sports and river life” fest is free and open to the public. . . . Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers and Crosby, Stills and Nash are pairing for a summer tour that comes to Jiffy Lube Live in Manassas on Aug. 15 at 7:30 p.m. Various pre-sales begin Tuesday at http://www.livenation.com. The public on-sale date is March 12. . . . The cast of TV’s “Glee” is going on the road in May for a four-city exclusive tour. The closest to us is May 28-29 at Radio City Music Hall in New York. Billboard’s annual Top 40 Money Makers of 2009 has been released, and no surprise that U2 tops the list, having taken in $108 million last year, most of it from its “360” tour. Music notes: “Idol” finalist returns for Thursday’s show
Last season’s fourth-place “American Idol” finisher, Allison Iraheta, will return to the show tonight (8 p.m. on Fox) to perform on the show’s first live-results show of the season. She’ll perform her single, “Scars.“ In other “Idol” news, in a conference call last week, Simon Cowell said he’d love Lady Gaga to be a guest mentor this season and expects a female to win this year’s “Idol” crown (read more at TimesDispatch.com, keyword: pop culture blog). . . . At the March 15 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame ceremony, Billie Joe Armstrong will induct The Stooges; Trey Anastasio will do the same for Genesis; Wyclef Jean will do the honors for inductee Jimmy Cliff; Steven Van Zandt will initiate The Hollies; Barry and Robin Gibb will do ABBA; and Jackson Browne will honor David Geffen. The ceremony will air live on Fuse. . . . Garth Brooks has announced a new round of dates for his stint at Wynn Las Vegas. He’ll play the Encore Theatre on June 25-27, July 16-18 and Aug. 6-8. Music notes: Celine Dion documentary playing Richmond movie theaters
Celine Dion will give fans a glimpse of her life onstage and backstage in “Celine: Through the Eyes of the World,“ a two Gabrielweek engagement of her concert film/documentary that began last night and is playing at Movieland and Commonwealth 20. . . . Sorry, Genesis fans, but there will be no reunion when the band is inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame March 15. Peter Gabriel has confirmed that he will not attend the event. . . . The “Twilight” movie and cast lead this year’s Nickelodeon 23rd annual Kids’ Choice Awards with five nominations, followed by Miley Cyrus with four. Music notes: New “We Are the World” premieres Friday
The video for the new version of “We Are the World” will debut during the opening ceremony of the Vancouver Winter Olympics tomorrow on NBC. Coverage begins at 7:30 p.m. The recast version of the 1985 Mrazsong, which features an eclectic array of musicians and celebrities including Kanye West, Jason Mraz, Barbra Streisand, Lil Wayne, Jennifer Hudson, Miley Cyrus and Toni Braxton, will be available for purchase at most online music retailers starting tomorrow. All proceeds will go to earthquake relief in Haiti through the newly formed We Are the World Foundation. . . . Through March 14, Comcast On Demand is presenting “Stand Up 2 Cancer,“ featuring videos from more than 60 artists (Celine Dion, Beastie Boys, Katy Perry, U2, Ne-Yo). Music notes: The Who gets Sirius
As a tie-in with its Super Bowl appearance Sunday, The Who is getting its own channel on Sirius XM starting today at 3 p.m. “The Who Channel” (16 on Sirius, 40 on XM) will feature music and interviews from the band’s five-decade career, and also the live broadcast of Sunday’s halftime performance. The channel runs until Monday night. . . . Ellen DeGeneres makes her “American Idol” debut Tuesday when the show moves into its Hollywood Round. Also, judge Kara DioGuardi and Elliott Yamin will head to Africa for a few days next month for a charity visit; some footage might be used on this year’s “Idol Gives Back.“ Simon Cowell is also getting charitable. He enlisted Susan Boyle, Jon Bon Jovi, Miley Cyrus, Rod Stewart, Robbie Williams, Mariah Carey and others for a remake of R.E.M.‘s “Everybody Hurts,“ the proceeds from which will benefit the Helping Haiti Fund and the Disasters Emergency Committee. Music notes: Benefit songs for Haiti top the charts
The Rockitz Battle of the Bands took place last week, with A Good Natured Riot winning first place. Caught in the Rift came in second, and The Velvet Nines took third. Check out their performance videos at http://www.rockitz.net. . . . “Hope for Haiti,“ the musical performances from last week’s all-star telethon, is the top-selling album on iTunes and debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 album chart. One of the highlights of the telethon, the performance of Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” by Justin Timberlake, Matt Morris and Charlie Sexton, is Timberlakethe best-selling single track on iTunes, while internationally, “Stranded (Haiti Mon Amour),“ the collaboration by Jay-Z, Rihanna and U2, has garnered the most charity downloads internationally. . . . Also for Haiti, will.i.am has remixed The Who’s classic “My Generation” and slapped Slash on the track, which will air during the Super Bowl (where the band will perform) and then go on sale via iTunes. Proceeds will benefit earthquake relief funds. Speaking of The Who, for those who like to have some gambling at their Super Bowl viewing party and guess which songs the halftime entertainment will play, Pete Townshend just ruined your fun. Jon Bon Jovi is filming a guest appearance for a Valentine’s Day episode of “30 Rock.“ The singer will play a former boyfriend of Tina Fey’s Liz Lemon. . . . Bob Dylan, John Mellencamp, Jennifer Hudson, Smokey Robinson and John Legend will perform at “In Performance at the White House: A Celebration of Music from the Civil Rights Movement,“ which airs on PBS on Feb. 11. . . . “Don’t Forget the Lyrics” is set to return as a cable/first-run syndicated series. Music Notes: Black Eyed Peas’ show moves to February

The show, originally slated to kick off the group’s tour Jan. 19, has been moved to Feb. 22. An “unforeseen scheduling conflict” is to blame. Some new names to add to the performance lineup of the 52nd annual Grammy Awards: Lady Gaga, Green Day, Zac Brown Band and the Dave Matthews Band. The band grossed nearly $530 million from its relentless touring between 2000 and 2009. Music notes: Singers wanted for Juvenile Diabetes gala
Though in recent years Elliott Yamin has performed at the annual Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation gala, this year, the singer will be on tour and unable to attend (side note: He’s at The Birchmere in Alexandria on Saturday). The JDRF is holding auditions Jan. 16 from noon to 5 p.m. at the Children’s Museum of Richmond for singers 6 years and older hoping to perform at the 10th annual gala on Feb. 27 at The Jefferson Hotel. Those auditioning must be prepared to tell a 30-second story about how diabetes has affected their lives and to sing to an instrumental CD.

This year’s New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival will boast performances from Pearl Jam, Aretha Franklin, My Morning Jacket, Lionel Richie, Anita Baker and a ton of other acts. Music notes: Buffett & Zac Brown doing CMT’s Crossroads
The Rockitz Battle of the Bands, featuring local contenders, finished its semifinals round Tuesday. Voters can watch the top five bands perform online on YouTube (head to rockitz.net for the link) and vote for the Jan. 23 finals. . . . . Michael Jackson’s “This Is It” arrives on DVD and Blu-Ray on Jan. 26. The discs will each contain more than 90 minutes of extras, including Buffetttwo documentaries that further detail the planning of his London shows. . . . Jimmy Buffett and the Zac Brown Band will share the stage this month to tape an installment of CMT’s “Crossroads” series. The show will premiere in March. . . . Nick Lachey will host NBC’s a cappella singing competition, “The Sing-Off,“ airing Dec. 14-16, with the finale Dec. 21. Celebrity judges include Ben Folds, Shawn Stockman (of Boyz II Men) and a rotating surprise guest each night. . . . Beatles Rock Band players can now download all of “Sgt. Music notes: The Jefferson Theater to reopen in Charlottesville
The Jefferson Theater in Charlottesville will reopen Nov. 27 with a performance from Sons of Bill and Jason Isbell & the 400 Unit. The venue has been closed three years for renovations. It’s returning with a lineup including Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings, Tea Leaf Green and a New Year’s Eve show with Gogol Bordello. Visit http://www.jeffersontheater.com for details. . . . If you haven’t gotten around to checking out Michael Jackson’s “This Is It,“ it’s still in theaters—and has made more than $200 million worldwide. Music notes
Adigitally remastered version of The Rolling Stones’ “Live at the Max” concert is available on DVD and Blu-ray. The release celebrates the 20th anniversary of the band’s “Steel Wheels” tour; the film was the first feature-length IMAX film ever shot. . . . On Tuesday, Fuse will air a John Mayer concert live from the Beacon Theatre in New York. The show coincides with the release of his fourth studio album, “Battle Studies,“ also out that day. . . . A new Beatles documentary, “The Beatles on Record,“ will premiere on The History Channel at 10 p.m. Nov. 25. The special explores how the guys developed as musicians and songwriters. . . . Katy Perry makes her “MTV Unplugged” debut on MTV.com at 6 a.m. Monday. The clips are a preview of her album of the same name that arrives Tuesday. Included in Perry’s “Unplugged” session are acoustic versions of hits “I Kissed a Girl” and “Waking Up in Vegas,“ plus the new “Brick by Brick” and a cover of Fountains of Wayne’s “Hackensack.“
