Music notes: The Jefferson Theater to reopen in Charlottesville
The Jefferson Theater in Charlottesville will reopen Nov. 27 with a performance from Sons of Bill and Jason Isbell & the 400 Unit. The venue has been closed three years for renovations. It’s returning with a lineup including Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings, Tea Leaf Green and a New Year’s Eve show with Gogol Bordello. Visit http://www.jeffersontheater.com for details. . . . If you haven’t gotten around to checking out Michael Jackson’s “This Is It,“ it’s still in theaters—and has made more than $200 million worldwide. But if you have a lot of patience and don’t want to pony up for the DVD early next year, you can see the film on MTV and its sister channels in 2011 as MTV Networks acquired the exclusive TV rights to air the concert documentary. . . . The Dave Matthews Band’s online store (http://www.davematthewsband.com) is giving fans a free “Live Trax” sampler from 2007 with every purchase of a physical item. Also, through Dec. 31, buyers who spend $25 will receive a free subscription to Rolling Stone (along with the sampler). . . . Leona Lewis is certainly hoping that “I See You” turns into the next “My Heart Will Go On.“ The British songbird’s tune will play over the end credits of James Cameron’s"Avatar,“ opening Dec. 18. Cameron’s last feature? “Titanic.“ . . . Liam Gallagher told an Italian radio station that he and the other former Oasis members are starting a new band—without brother Noel. . . . Adigitally remastered version of The Rolling Stones’ “Live at the Max” concert is available on DVD and Blu-ray. The release celebrates the 20th anniversary of the band’s “Steel Wheels” tour; the film was the first feature-length IMAX film ever shot. . . . On Tuesday, Fuse will air a John Mayer concert live from the Beacon Theatre in New York. The show coincides with the release of his fourth studio album, “Battle Studies,“ also out that day. . . . A new Beatles documentary, “The Beatles on Record,“ will premiere on The History Channel at 10 p.m. Nov. 25. The special explores how the guys developed as musicians and songwriters. . . . Katy Perry makes her “MTV Unplugged” debut on MTV.com at 6 a.m. Monday. The clips are a preview of her album of the same name that arrives Tuesday. Included in Perry’s “Unplugged” session are acoustic versions of hits “I Kissed a Girl” and “Waking Up in Vegas,“ plus the new “Brick by Brick” and a cover of Fountains of Wayne’s “Hackensack.“

Congrats to Richmond singer-songwriter Susan Greenbaum, whose song “Spin Like a Top” last week won the People’s Choice Award at the Songwriters Showcase at the Smithsonian. Greenbaum was among 12 candidates selected to perform at the event, and she was presented with the award from guest speaker Lamont Dozier, of the famed songwriter trio Holland-Dozier-Holland (“Baby Love,“ “You Keep Me Hangin’ On,“ “Reach Out [I’ll Be There]“ to name a very few). . . . A new music site, http://www.livekick.com, gives fans the ability to customize their concert updates by city, ticket price, artist and genre. . . . ABC will air a Janet Jackson special Nov. 18 at 10 p.m., the day after her “Number Ones” album arrives. . . . If you missed Madonna’s record-breaking Sticky & Sweet Tour (its $408 million gross is the highest for a solo artist), check out the new premium channel Epix tomorrow—available on Verizon FiOS—for its debut with a Madonna concert culled from her multinight stand in Buenos Aires. A DVD is reportedly in the works for release by the end of the year. . . . Lilith Fair is returning in 2010, and D.C., Philadelphia and New York are among the first cities announced as tour stops. The all-female fest, which was a huge success in the late-‘90s, also has a new Web site, http://www.lilithfair.com. . . . On Monday at 11 p.m., the Fuse network will premiere “Nirvana Live at Reading,“ a 1992 concert that’s finally getting its official release. Music notes: U2 concert to stream live Sunday
On Sunday, U2 will stream its concert from the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, Calif., live on YouTube at 11:30 p.m. The show will be archived for later viewing. . . . The video for Adam Lambert’s new single, “Time for Miracles,“ from the soundtrack to “2012,“ has made an early appearance at http://www.music.myspace.com. Lambert’s debut album, “For Your Entertainment,“ is due Nov. 23. . . . Taylor Swift has announced a round of tour dates for 2010, including a March 20 stop at John Paul Jones Arena in Charlottesville. No ticket information is available. The same goes for Chris Brown’s Nov. 22 Landmark Theater gig. His record label has announced the tour and a date at the venue is on hold, but no contract has been signed yet. . . . Music notes: McBride and Adkins coming to Richmond next year
The 40-date Shine All Night Tour starring Martina McBride and Trace Adkinskicks off next month and a date is etched in for March 12 at the Richmond Coliseum. Keep some holiday cash aside—tickets go on sale Jan. 29. . . . To pump his new album, “Southern Voice,“ out Oct. 20, Tim McGraw will make two appearances on “Late Night With David Letterman” Monday and Friday—and the two performances will be followed by mini concerts, called “Live on Letterman,“ which will be broadcast on CBS’ Web site (http://www.cbs.com) . . . . Fittingly, Alice Cooper has a new single available on iTunes called “Keepin’ Halloween Alive.“ The song also can be purchased as a Digital 45 on the site with a vocal-free version and digital booklet. The charity special “Idol Gives Back” will return during “American Idol” in April, after taking a one-year hiatus. . . . Michael Jackson’s “This Is It” doesn’t open until Oct. 28, but interest has been so rampant that thousands of theaters nationwide will hold midnight screenings Oct. 27. Merriweather Post Pavilion will be the site of MTV’s first Halloween festival, “Ulalume” (a nod to a poem by the master of the macabre Edgar Allan Poe). On Oct. 23, the woodsy surroundings at the Columbia, Md., venue will be turned into a “ghoul-haunted woodland,“ while Paramore, AFI, Dead by Sunrise and Kid Cudi perform. Parts of the event will air during Halloween week on all of MTV’s channels. . . . Bruce Hornsby and his Noisemakers have been invited to perform on the first week of “The Jay Leno Show.“ They will be joined by a special pal: Eric Clapton. Hornsby will play the new “Space Is the Place” on Sept. 17, with Clapton handling guitar. The guitar icon also plays on the song on Hornsby’s upcoming album, “Levitate.“ . . . ZZ Top unveils the concert DVD “Double Down Live” on Oct. 20, which features performances from its 1980 “Deguello” tour in Germany and footage from several concerts last year.

It doesn’t involve judging, but it is a TV gig. Paula Abdul announced this week via Twitter that she’s hosting VH1’s “Divas” show, which airs live from New York on Sept. 17. This year’s event features Kelly Clarkson, Leona Lewis and Miley Cyrus. . . . Pete Townshend announced on The Who’s Web site (http://www.thewho.com) that he’s writing a musical called “Floss,“ which deals with getting old. The guy who wrote “My Generation” (“I hope I die before I get old”) says, “At 64, I now want to take on aging and mortality, using the powerfully angry context of rock’n'roll.“ The show is expected to premiere in 2011. . . . A Jason Mraz concert in Chicago was immortalized on film last week for an upcoming DVD release. Colbie Caillat made a surprise appearance to duet on “Lucky.“ . . . Coming in October is “Led Zeppelin: Good Times, Bad Times, A Visual Biography of the Ultimate Band,“ which shows the private and public lives of the band in rare and iconic photos.

Tommy Lee burned his left hand last week while playing with sparklers meaning he’s off the Crue Fest 2 shows for now. The tour is slated to hit Virginia Beach Amphitheater tomorrow and Nissan Pavilion on Saturday.Sevendust’s Morgan Rose is replacing Lee behind the drum kit, but the rangy Lee has still been appearing at the shows to chat with the crowd and play piano on “Home Sweet Home.“ . . . Daughtry will embark on its first headlining arena tour this fall with Theory of a Deadman and Cavo opening. The tour has a Nov. 20 date penciled in for John Paul Jones Arena in C’ville. Tickets are expected to go on sale Sept. 19. . . . A $165 coffee-table book called “The Official Michael Jackson Opus” will be released in early December. Jason Mraz has plenty to celebrate, starting with the 1.3 million in sales of his third album, “We Sing, We Dance, We Steal Things,“ and the 67-week chart run of the album’s first single, “I’m Yours.“ Now the Mechanicsville native tells Billboard that a DVD from his current Gratitude Café tour is in the works. . . . “Can’t Keep On Loving You (From a Distance),“ the second single fromElliott Yamin’s sophomore album, “Fight For Love,“ is due to hit adult contemporary radio Monday. The title track peaked at No. 80 on the Billboard pop chart. . . . Miley Cyrus is scheduled to perform her new song, “Party in the U.S.A.,“ on the Teen Choice Awards, airing at 8 p.m. Monday on Fox. The two-hour special is hosted by theJonas Brothers. . . . My Chemical Romance is in the studio with producer Brendan O’Brien, best known for his work with Pearl Jam and Aerosmith. The band has been working on its fourth album since May 2008. . . . Against Grace, the pop-rock band whose members hail from Chesterfield County and Richmond, will head to Japan next month for a weeklong USO tour. The quintet will play at two Army bases and at the Atsugi Bon Odori Festival in Tokyo. Also, Armed Forces Entertainment will provide 10,000 American troops with a copy of the band’s debut album, “Monroe.“ . . . Shelby Lynne will perform two new Lynnesongs on the Aug. 9 episode of “Army Wives.“ Lynne will appear as character Stella Raye on the Lifetime series. . . . Fans of Fox’s “Glee” can hit Hulu.com for an exclusive first-look at an upcoming performance from the series, which returns Sept. 9. The new video features Mercedes (Amber Riley) singing Jazmine Sullivan’s “Bust Your Windows.“
