Friends Association to offer arts programs for children
The Friends Association for Children will offer fall music and performing-arts programs for children from age 2 and up beginning Oct. 5. Preschooler programs include weekly classroom instruction (ages 2 to 5) at all Friends centers, plus chorus and creative movement (ages 4 to 5) at the Friends Family Center, 1004 St. John St. Other Friends centers are Robert L. Taylor Childcare, 929 N. 26th St., and Mary Tyler McClenahan Childcare, 2700 Bensley Commons Blvd.

New Richmond venue Hat Factory sets its music lineup
The Hat Factory, a live-music venue opening in the former Toad’s Place on Richmond’s Canal Walk, will make its debut Sept. 11 with a concert by roots rockers the BoDeans, according to its Web site. The rock band Cowboy Mouth will follow Sept. 17. The events were among several listed on http://www.hatfactoryva.com. The schedule lists Saturdays as “Country Night.“

Massive increase in Jackson’s radio play
Michael’s music During the first half of last week, total national airplay for Jackson’s most popular 20 songs averaged about 350 spins a day. On the day of his death, that number spiked to 10,000 spins, and on Friday, 20,000 spins. Dogwood Dell summer season kicks off June 11
Plan to be entertained this summer at the Dogwood Dell Amphitheater, which promises a mix of new acts and talent with some old favorites. The season begins with a pre-season “curtain-warmer” on Thursday at 8 p.m., featuring teachers from the Maggie L. Walker Governor’s School, as “The Faculty Lounge Lizards.“ On Friday, Susan Greenbaum and her band will perform for the official season opening at 8 p.m., playing a set of original music and a set of cover songs by Carole King.

Death of Gary Gerloff will be a loss to area music scene
James Gerald “Gary” Gerloff cast a large presence throughout the Richmond music community. He was quite literally a bear of a man whose shock of wiry white hair and beard recalled the late Jerry Garcia—a likeness Mr. Gerloff, an admirer of the Grateful Dead co-founder, welcomed. Mr. Gerloff was a talented musician, singer and songwriter in his own right, but his impact on the local music scene went deeper. He was quick to champion other musicians and deflect praise from himself to those with whom he played.
