Attorney: Set aside Joey Parrish’s guilty verdicts
A Powhatan County judge will be asked tomorrow to set aside guilty verdicts of involuntary manslaughter and assault against the younger of two men convicted in last summer’s shooting death of Tahliek Taliaferro. Attorney Craig S. Cooley, who represents 18-year-old Joseph L. Parrish Jr., says he will argue that there was insufficient evidence in the case to establish that Parrish aided or in any way abetted his cousin’s reckless, unpremeditated actions in Taliaferro’s death.

FBI investigating Taliaferro slaying
The FBI is working with the Powhatan County Sheriff’s Office to investigate the slaying of high school student Tahliek Taliaferro for possible civil-rights violations, law-enforcement officials said yesterday.

Henrico residents discuss perceived school inequality
Although only about a dozen people showed for a Henrico County NAACP-hosted forum with the county’s School Board, they had plenty of questions about equality in the 48,000-student district. More than a year after a previous board voted to temporarily shift some funds from a Fairfield Middle School renovation to a project in the western part of the county, concerns still lingered. The board had answers.

Tasered woman guilty in Henrico
A Richmond woman who accused Henrico County police of abusing her during an arrest was convicted yesterday of multiple charges linked to the incident. A Henrico judge, pointedly referring to a prior conviction in Richmond for resisting arrest, sentenced Deontra C. Johnson to one month in jail yesterday in connection with a traffic stop that ended with Johnson being repeatedly Tasered by a Henrico police officer.

Goochland forum set on racial disparities in schools
The Goochland County NAACP and the local school system are scheduled Monday to hold the second in a series of public forums addressing racial disparities in the district. NAACP member Sekou Shabaka went before the School Board in July to ask school officials to address disproportionately high numbers of African-American students in special education and in discipline cases.
