Burress’ four-year tenure with the Giants was highlighted by a game-winning touchdown catch in the Super Bowl against the previously undefeated New England Patriots in February 2008, but it also was dogged by fines and suspensions.

CHARLOTTE, N.C.—Bill Werber, who was the oldest living ex-major leaguer and a teammate of Babe Ruth, died today. He was 100. Mr. Werber, a career .271 hitter who led the American League in stolen bases three times, played with Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Jimmie Foxx and Lefty Grove in stints with the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox. He hit .370 during the 1940 World Series as the third baseman for the winning Cincinnati Reds.

The Washington Redskins’ final home game of the year, against the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday, Dec. 21, has been moved to a 4:15 p.m. kickoff. The game will be broadcast on FOX. The NFL announced the change as part of its weekly flex game options. The Eagles-Redskins matchup is attractive because it involves two large TV markets and both teams could still be in playoff contention at kickoff. Right now the Eagles (7-5-1) are a half-game ahead of the Redskins (7-6).

Plaxico Burress is the NFL’s leading lunkhead, a Pro Bowl player in terms of recklessness and foolishness. But the New York Giants wide receiver should not be regarded as a criminal. Burress shot himself in the right thigh early Saturday morning while in a Manhattan night club. He had jammed a .40-caliber Glock pistol into the waistband of his sweatpants, and when he tried to grab the gun as it slid down his leg, the Glock discharged.
