Cable was accused of breaking assistant coach Randy Hanson’s jaw and teeth in a training-camp fight. The Napa County district attorney did not file charges. Hanson sued Cable and the team for damages suffered during the scuffle. The Plainville Fire Department responded to Mr. Tatupu’s home on Tuesday and took him to the hospital, Lt. Richard Ball said.

Sports briefs: Janikowski gets top deal for kickers
Janikowski will be guaranteed $9 million in the deal, a source familiar with the contract said. Janikowski was eligible to be an unrestricted free agent if the Raiders did not sign him to a contract or place the transition or franchise tag on him by Feb. 25. Sutton, 41, was arrested Thursday after agents from the Oklahoma Bureau of Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs said he picked up a shipment of painkillers under another person’s name.

WOODY COLUMN: Warner’ career was a rocket ride to greatness
Players come and go in the NFL. We overlook many departures because they involve marginal performers, the 10-15 players on every roster who exist year to year in the league. Yesterday, Kurt Warner announced his retirement. It was hard not to notice. It will be harder still to fill the void left by the quarterback for the Arizona Cardinals, New York Giants, St. Louis Rams, Amsterdam Admirals and Iowa Barnstormers.

Super Bowl ad featuring Tim Tebow creates stir
NEW YORK—A coalition of women’s groups called on CBS yesterday to scrap its plan to broadcast an ad during the Super Bowl featuring college football star Tim Tebow and his mother, which critics say is likely to have an anti-abortion message. “An ad that uses sports to divide rather than to unite has no place in the biggest national sports event of the year—an event designed to bring Americans together,“ said Jemhu Greene, president of the New York-based Women’s Media Center.
New Orleans’ celebration was 43 years in the making
METAIRIE, La.—Sean Payton still hadn’t gone home yet when the New Orleans Saints returned to work the day after the biggest win in franchise history. Drained after an overtime triumph that set off celebrations all across the city, Payton joined family and friends for dinner downtown and then relaxed in a hotel. “There was just so much emotion,“ Payton said yesterday at the team’s suburban training center. “You know, when you finish with the locker room . . . you just try to find your family. My son’s concern is the confetti’s going to keep us from being able to play catch on the field. That was his concern. It was just good to hug them and be around the family and enjoy the time. There never seems to be enough of it.“

NFL notes: Carroll takes over as Seahawks’ coach
SEATTLE—Pete Carroll is gone from USC and back in the NFL, taking over as coach of the Seattle Seahawks after getting an offer he could not refuse. Carroll was 6-10 in 1994 with the New York Jets and then 27-21 while twice reaching the playoffs from ‘97-99 with the Patriots—before he restored a dynasty at USC beginning in 2001. Carroll, 58, ends one of the most successful runs in college football history with a 97-19 record, two national championships and seven Pac-10 titles.
