The Navy recently announced its proposal to upgrade Naval Station Mayport, Fla., to accommodate a nuclear aircraft carrier. Although the decision has not been formally announced, it is widely known that the Navy plans to move an aircraft carrier from Norfolk to Mayport.

Recently, the Navy announced a decision to homeport a nuclear carrier at Naval Station Mayport, Fla., establishing a second nuclear port on the East Coast. The decision was based on neither economic input nor political influence. It was a decision to protect our strategic assets and sailors. A decision based on national security—pure and simple. The facts supporting the Navy’s decision are overwhelming and simply irrefutable.

Weekend wrecks fatal to 5 Virginians  11/25/08 12:01 AM

A Richmond woman has died of injuries she suffered in a two-vehicle crash Sunday in Chesterfield County, police said. Lola T. Brooks, 86, was a passenger in a car that was eastbound in the 9100 block of Midlothian Turnpike when it collided with a pickup truck just after 8 p.m. The crash occurred as the truck, which was headed south on Pinetta Drive, tried to cross Midlothian Turnpike, police said.

Weekend wrecks fatal to 4 Virginians  11/25/08 12:01 AM

A Centreville man was killed Sunday when his car ran off Braddock Road (state Route 620) in Fairfax County and hit a tree, Virginia State Police said. Frank Jensen, 31, died at the scene at 1:55 a.m. near the intersection with Virginia Chase Drive (state Route 8318). Police said Jensen was driving east on Braddock Road when his car veered to the left and struck a curb before hitting a wooden fence, a utility pole and a tree, ejecting him from the vehicle. He was not wearing a seat belt, police said.

DHL lays off 9,500, cuts operation  11/11/08 1:01 AM

Citing heavy losses and fierce competition, the overnight-delivery giant DHL is cutting 9,500 American jobs and significantly reducing its air and ground operations in the U.S. DHL’s retreat will enable UPS Inc. and FedEx Corp. to further expand their combined 80 percent share of the U.S. market. DHL has about 5 percent of the market.

Hopewell Grant’s Headquarters at City Point in Petersburg National Battlefield will welcome visitors to observe an archaeological survey starting this weekend as part of Virginia Archaeology Month. Kaine names 3 to Norfolk Circuit Court  10/07/08 9:18 AM

Gov. Timothy M. Kaine is again making his mark on the Virginia judiciary—this time announcing picks for the Norfolk Circuit Court. In a written statement this afternoon, Kaine said he’s naming to the bench Jerrauld Jones, Louis Sherman and Jack Doyle. Jones, a former member of the House of Delegates, currently is a juvenile and domestic relations court judge.

U.S. attorney leaving post  10/07/08 12:12 AM

Chuck Rosenberg, the U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia since 2006, is stepping down from the job this month. Spokesman Jim Rybicki said Rosenberg informed President Bush of his intentions in a Sept. 30 letter. Rosenberg’s last day on the job will be Oct. 22. Rybicki said an acting U.S. attorney likely will be appointed until a replacement is nominated by the president and confirmed by the U.S. Senate.
