The Oakton Cougars remained undefeated and advanced to the state Group AAA girls basketball tournament championship for the second time after ousting Lake Taylor of Norfolk 71-62 this afternoon at the Siegel Center in Richmond. The Cougars will play for the state title against the winner of tonight’s 7 o’clock Cosby-Princess Anne game. The championship game is tomorrow night at 7 p.m. This afternoon, after a tight first half, the hot-shooting Cougars gave themselves a workable cushion with an 11-4 run to end the third quarter. The lead grew to 10 points three times. Every time Lake Taylor scored, Oakton matched it.

Early this season, someone in the Atlee High locker room started singing a country song. It turned out they all knew the words, and by the time the whole team was singing, the Raiders had an unofficial theme song. Atlee’s season ended yesterday with a 74-45 loss to Oakton in the Group AAA quarterfinals at Robinson Secondary School. The music hasn’t stopped.
