Martin Strother, singer and music instructor, dies at 60
When Richmonder Martin Strother began to sing, his powerful basso profondo voice—without benefit of a microphone—easily commanded an auditorium or concert hall. “He was not a tall man, but he had a tall voice—a big, booming bass voice. He had a voice you would not forget,“ said soprano Lisa Edwards-Burr, assistant professor of music at Virginia Union University. She first worked with him at Dogwood Dell, when he portrayed her father in the Scott Joplin opera “Treemonisha.“

Retired Hermitage teacher Alfred T. Dudley dies at 84
Alfred Traylor Dudley’s efforts to bring history to life for Hermitage High School students kept Bruce Bowen coming back for more. Bowen took American history from Mr. Dudley during the 1966-1967 school year. Upon finishing college, Bowen returned to Hermitage—and to Mr. Dudley. “When I became a teacher, he was in Room 148, and I was next door in Room 150. And we taught next door to each other for 20 years,“ recalled Bowen, who retired last spring as Hermitage’s athletic and activities director.

Service today for the Rev. Claude Charles Vaché
When the Rev. Claude Charles Vaché became diocesan bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Southern Virginia in 1978, he was seen as “high church” or very traditional in his views, according to clergy colleagues. However, “he prayed a lot over issues, always asking for guidance,“ said his “foster son,“ Valdeir France of Portsmouth. Unequivocally opposed to the ordination of women, he surprised his diocese by changing his mind. “He began to think and talk about it and thought it was the right thing to do,“ France said.
