The H.C. Edwards Chapter of the Ruffed Grouse Society will hold its 19th annual Sportsmen’s Banquet on Oct. 25 at the Augusta Expoland on Expo Road in Fisherville, beginning with cocktails at 6 p.m. Dinner will be served at 7:30 p.m. The banquet will feature live and silent auctions, games, drawings and door prizes; highlighted with a large selection of quality firearms, artwork and collectibles. As with all RGS fund-raisers, proceeds from the event will be used to restore and protect grouse and woodcock habitat.

Outdoor events to raise funds  09/25/08 6:01 PM

Folks willing to walk for a cause have options this weekend to help those dealing with food allergies or families dealing with infertility.

  • Walkers will gather at Innsbrook in western Henrico County tomorrow to raise money and awareness for the Food Allergy and Anaphylaxis Network. Check-in begins at 9 a.m.; the 2-mile walk begins at 10 a.m. Local organizer Sara Kamencik said about 300 people have signed up to walk.

    Castaway Sporting Goods (804-706-9100) reports crappie are starting to come back a little bit, with people starting to buy more small and medium bait. The jackfish are biting. Castaway’s two-day Classic tournament was held last weekend as 75 people qualified and competed on Saturday and Sunday: 1. Mitch Blankenshik/ Wayne Braughn , 30.7 pounds; 2. Larry Lester / Barry Tucker , 26.4; 3. Arick Johnson/Cliff Adney , 25.77; 4. Robert Laphan / Adam Laphan , 24.27; 5. Buddy Rhodes / Jimbo Rice , 21. 59, big fish: 6.32.

    Modified and new warnings about eating fish caught from various rivers and reservoirs around the state were issued today by the Virginia Department of Health. The new fish consumption advisories were issued because of mercury and polychlorinated biphenyls contamination. In some cases, residents are being advised to eat no more than two meals a month of specific fish. Some species of fish, however, should not be eaten at all from certain waters.
