Eagles extend reign in district  01/24/09 12:01 AM

The other eight members of the Colonial District are having a tough time beating the Mills Godwin girls basketball team. The Eagles, ranked No. 3 in The Times-Dispatch Top 10 and the Central Region runners-up the past two seasons, have won 28 consecutive games against Colonial foes spanning last year and this. They have lost just once, to Deep Run, in 2½ seasons.

A change in defense sparked Deep Run to a Colonial District victory over 10th-ranked Patrick Henry. The Wildcats trailed by 10 points after the first quarter but outscored the Patriots 16-4 in the second quarter to turn the momentum. Deep Run gained revenge for an overtime loss in the teams’ first meeting behind Emma Newins, who scored 23 points and added five rebounds and three steals. Amy Turner contributed 12 points and five rebounds, and Jena Baldaino had 11 points.
