Williamson, Pulley best in Central
Thomas Dale’s Eric Williamson ran a 16:45 yesterday to help the Knights win the Central District boys cross country title over the upper course at Pocahontas State Park. It was the 18th consecutive in individual title for a Knights runner. Thomas Dale also won the team title, upsetting regular-season champion Matoaca. Coach-of-the-year honors went to Thomas Dale’s Bob Gulley.

‘Cats, in a flash
high school football Last night’s Deep Run game was a lesson in punctuality. Just 41 seconds in, three touchdowns already had been scored and the Wildcats were on their way to a 27-9 victory that protected their undefeated season. First, Antone Exum returned the opening kickoff 88 yards for a touchdown. The Patriots responded on their first offensive play, a play-action pass from Brandon Cash that landed in the arms of Raquis Morris. He sprinted downfield for a 75-yard touchdown.

Patriots’ pride takes a pounding
For 27 years, Ray Long has coached a proud and prosperous Patrick Henry football team. The Patriots have won district titles, regional titles, and the 1994 Group AAA state title. This week, Long needed all his experience, and that of his veteran assistants, to prepare for the game tonight at undefeated Deep Run. Running back/linebacker Adrian Cavanaugh got the message.

Wildcat golfers win Colonial
Regular-season champion Deep Run rolled to victory in the Colonial District golf tournament yesterday at Hanover Country Club. The Wildcats posted a four-score total of 315 to finish 14 strokes in front of Patrick Henry. The Wildcats already had earned a berth in next week’s Central Region tournament at Lakeside Country Club and River’s Bend Golf Course via the regular-season title. Tournament runner-up Patrick Henry claimed the district’s second spot in the eight-team field.
