Petersburg Generals filling void for some Richmond-area baseball fans  07/07/09 12:01 AM

PETERSBURG With the Richmond Braves gone, the Petersburg Generals are driving fans south for some baseball this summer. The Generals are reaping the benefits of the R-Braves’ departure, though only slightly. Midway through the season, attendance and revenue are up 6 percent, but the team’s management is hopeful for a big finish to the summer.

Petersburg Generals aiming to fill a void  05/03/09 12:01 AM

Without the Richmond Braves in town for the first time since 1966, the highest level of baseball in Central Virginia this year is the Petersburg Generals of the Coastal Plain League. The 14-team CPL involves college players with eligibility remaining, wood bats, and competition from late-May to early-August. The Generals will play their 29 home games at the Petersburg Sports Complex (capacity of 2,500). They averaged 715 fans at that venue last season, according to Jeremy Toombs, the Generals’ general manager.
